Based off half a conversation at the space last night, here are some links. If you are interested in heart rate monitors this is probably for you.

Here's a Sparkfun interface for a heart rate monitor - https://www.sparkfun.com/products/8661 - $59.95

Here's another retailer offering the radio module that interface is built around - http://www.canakit.com/polar-heart-rate-module-rmcm01-sen-08660.html - $14.95

The radio outputs a 1ms pulse per heartbeat which would be simple to read with Arduino. The Sparkfun board has a PIC microcontroller which does this job, so using it with an Arduino would be stacking one micro on top of another, which is a bit redundant.

Thanks for that information Sam.

This is the chip opened up.

He talks about various alternatives here as well:

It looks like Polar don't like to supply their chips to the developer market without prior approval etc.

From https://www.adafruit.com/product/1077

"Please note: this pack is designed for students, hobbyists, engineers and artists. It is not a developer pack and is not for use in product development! Polar specifically wants product developers to contact them to license the technology for OEM use so they can make sure the application is appropriate. Please do not purchase this with the assumption that it will guarantee your product's approval."

The adafruit kit looks like it uses the RE07S:

There is parallax code here for it:
