If you were interested in getting an Amateur Radio licence, but the hundreds of dollars in exams fees is putting you off:
The next session of US examinations, under the ARRL/VEC will be held during the morning at the Central Coast Field Day at Wyong on Sunday, February 26, commencing at 9:00 am.
There are 3 levels, Technician (gets you an F-call), General (gets you Advanced), and Extra.
Noting that candidates need to do all papers up to the level of the licence they desire, a range of books, websites, audio CDs, and Apps are available which provide training and/or practice examinations. The session fee will be US$15, or the equivalent, currently around A$21. 10 year US licences are free, but you need to use this to apply for a VK call.
Candidates will need a US postal address, such as that of a friend, or a ShopMate address; and in the interests of efficiency and accuracy, should obtain an FCC Registration Number, or FRN, from the FCC website, using that address.
73,
Julian.
