Rpi and Arduino programming. UNO vs NANO - drivers

I have the basics working, but on my PC the NANOs require a "special driver" as they aren't the stock comms chip as used in the Unos and other ones.
I have the driver for the PC.
I can program an UNO from the PI but need to program one of these NANOs with the non standard comms chip.
Sure I can try and see what happens, but thought I would ask all the same.
On the PI when I load the Arduino IDE and program the UNO, I use their "default" "comms port" (USB) setting and it works.
