What version of Powerbuilder will be compliant for Windows
Vista OS?

Thanks

My guess will be PB 12 and/or some release of 11.x after 11.0 is released
in Q1. I would expect that 11.x will be better at running under Vista
properly and 12 will address the inclusion of Vista features.

Sybase has made no official statement regarding Vista support in
PowerBuilder as yet.

However, Chris is correct in that there are features in components of Vista
that we'd like to
take advantage of by PB12 if not before.

Does that include the new Vista security, deployment, ...? Someone mentioned that components ( OCX, DLL ) registered for user A with
admin privilege or just Administrator will not be visible for user B with the same admin priv??

Our current plan is for PowerBuilder 11 to support Vista within 3 months of
GA. That is because we were not sure which would come out first when we
finalized plans for 11 - PB 11, or Vista.

Initially, we will provide support for Vista in terms of support that we
provide for other operating systems - i.e, we will run our tests on Vista
and support that platform for development and deployment. We will not
specifically certify with Vista right away, but will extend our support in a
future release.

Hi Sue,

I have just done some tests on the latest Vista rc with our PB10.5 apps.
The seem to run quite okay except for a few gui flaws that are not really a
problem.
But there is at least one showstopper that is a real pain and propably
preventing us from running our apps in Vista. Considering the fact that we
just upgraded from PB8.03 last summer we are not really pleased with the
idea to upgrade again solely for running in Vista.
It will be a matter of time when our custs start running their new pcs with
Vista.

Will there be maintenance release(s) for PB10.5 that at least eliminates the
vista-showstoppers that dont have a workaround?

TIA
Harry

Well, I think it would be helpful for you to share the show stoppers with
the group.

The only "show stopper" for PB 10.5 that we have found is the RTF control
(both Sybase PB version and TX Edit OCX 11, 12, 13). The best work around
is to use "flat" style for button bar, status bar and ruler bar. Then do a
setredraw(false), enabled=false, visible=false, <do operations> then reverse
the previous sequence to re-enable the control. This "disable sequence" and
"enable sequence" has resolved the system hangs from printing, save, and
other operations that could cause a messagebox or response window to
display.

Hi Tyler,

I don´t know why i didn´t mention the showstopper, but our main problems are
treeviews. When closing a window with a treeview PB crashes.
Also placing a window on the mdi frame (statusbar) is causing major panic in
PB. But that is a problem we can solve by eliminating that window. There
will propably be other ways to put information in the right side of the
statusbar.
(Suggestions welcome btw)

TIA
Harry

Well even Microsoft isn't planning on releasing an update to its
development tools until AFTER Vista has been released:

"Windows Vista and Visual Studio compatability
Windows Vista will support applications that are written for the .NET
Framework 1.1 and 2.0. We will be updating Visual Studio 2005 again
to support Windows Vista shortly after commercial availability. Until
then, developers may experience issues with debugging, registering COM
components and other operations. Visual Studio .NET 2002 and Visual
Studio .NET 2003 will not be supported on Windows Vista. We want to
make sure that customers understand that the .NET Framework 1.1 and
2.0 will be supported so applications should continue to run as
expected."

http://blogs.msdn.com/somasegar/archive/2006/09/26/772250.aspx

I'm not saying that it isn't something to be concerned about and it is
something that will be addressed (at least for supported versions of
PowerBuilder) but it may be premature to start raising these issues
when using a Beta version of Vista. I know that our QA team has been
doing some testing of PowerBuilder with Vista and have identified some
issues but until Vista is GA we won't really know the extent of the
problems that need to be addressed.

Based on past history with PB releases and MS OS releases - I would find it
MOST likely that the MR releases of currently supported PB versions would
work on adding support for the recently released MS OS. So, I fully expect
that PB 10.5.2 would have support for Windows Vista. Doesn't mean that it
will happen - just my expectation.
:)

BTW - Even thought Vista is not supported under PB 10.5 - I would still
consider it worth the while to open a case with Sybase Technical Support on
the issues you have found. At least this way they can have them on a list -
as opposed to missing them.... (Or perhaps already you have opened a case?)

Tim.

I would be interested in hearing about any problems found in vista with
'current' versions of PB - prior to any changes that sybase makes specifically
to address incompatibilities that MS added. I have customers running mostly PB
9 (some PB7, 6.5) versions of applications. They will be asking if they can run
vista; some will just install it without asking.

Past experience with PB and MS new OS's (and service packs) has been that the
application runs fine even though the new OS isn't supported by Sybase for that
version of PB. Usually it is applications written using MS tools that break
(xp service pack 2 was a great example of this). This has been something that
I've enjoyed pointing out to customers.....

Hello,

We're experiencing a problem with PB 9.01 and Windows Vista that maybe
worth noting.

In some cases where Double type variables are used for calculations we
get the following error but only on Vista :

"Double or Real expression has overflowed on Vista"

We've tried using the 9.0.3 EBF but that didn't solve our problem. I've
posted this problem on another forum.

http://groups.google.com/group/sybase.public.powerbuilder.general/browse_frm/thread/828f8b34b0f2291d/#

Apart from the security hassles brought about by Vista, we've had very
little modifications to our apps and PB work great.

Regards,

Robert

Has the calculation in fact overflowed? This looks to be a boundary
check introduced in Vista where in the past it was silently ignored. The
silently ignored overflows always create interesting and unusual behaviours.

O God ... its Bill Clinton - I smoked but never inhaled.

No version currently of PB is certified for Vista! Sybase is looking at PB
11.x (ie after 11.0 GA).

Well I am not Bill... but... thanks for pointing out that Vista is not
currently a *supported* platform as I missed that very important point
in my response. That said, the error may simply be exactly what the
error is indicating -- an overflow calculation. If the error is not
valid, it is something that needs to be on the radar screen as PB moves
towards supporting Vista.

Even in PB 11 testing there have been a few people trying PB 11
applications on Vista. They are not overflowing like this - but they are
certainly getting some abnormal behaviour. Sue Dunnell posted a response to
these people that basically said that Sybase was committed to addressing the
Vista issues within 3 months of its GA. Even MS has stated that VS2005
applications may not work properly and it plans to address these in VS2007.

Hi,

Thanks for your responses. We are planning to be ready for Vista when
it goes GA and our suite of apps will be released in March (Beta in
January). Until then we will still be using PB 9.01 and we've haven't
looked into PB 11 that much yet. I guess that I will have a couple of
sleepless nights finding a solution to this problem.

Thanks again.

Robert

Rob;

Remember that PB 9.x is ANSI and PB 10.0 and higher is Unicode. Since
Windows 2000 (better in XP), the OS's are also Unicode. So running PB 9.x
generated applications under Vista will be even further handicapped by this.
Plus the fact that Sybase has added allot of fixes to PB in the 10.x series
to handle nuances (ie:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dllproc/bas
e/dynamic-link_library_search_order.asp) in Windows XP SP2. Service pack 2
is more akin to Vista, thus moving to a higher release of PB will definitely
improve your chances of running with Vista upon GA (Jan. 30, 2007 now -
http://www.adtmag.com/article.aspx?id=19597)

Please think about joining the PB 11 beta test group
(http://www.sybase.com/detail_list?id=106505). Its free and you can help
Sybase with your Vista testing feedback!
