NullPointerException causes HTTP 404 response

I have an implementation based on a generated server stub which is throwing a NullPointerException (because of something in my code) deployed to Tomcat via IntelliJ.

The result is that the client gets a 404 response, and the Tomcat error page, which has had me looking for the wrong problem for several hours.

Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?
