A decades-old Missouri anti-segregation law is preventing a third-grader
from returning to his charter school because he is black.

Edmund Lee’s mother has started an online petition to change the law.
She had gathered more than 45,000 signatures.

“When I read the guidelines I was in shock,” La’Shieka White told Fox 2
Now. “I was crying.”

Edmund is an A student at Gateway Science Academy in St. Louis.

“I kind of feel bad,” he told the station.

His family is moving to a nearby school district. When White asked if
her son could continue to attend Gateway she was handed the state
regulations on St. Louis transfer programs.

Those rules say Edmund can return to Gateway but only if he doesn’t
identify as African-American.

The station reports that the rules were designed to address segregation
problems with St. Louis schools.

The charter school says it may be time to revisit the law.

“If this helps us start a conversation about maybe some things that
could be different with the law, then that is a good thing,” Gateway
assistant principal Janet Moak told Fox2.

White’s petition supporters include Edmund’s teacher.

“To not see his face in the halls next year would be extremely sad,”
Tiffany Luis said. “The family is saying they want to stay. I don’t
understand why they can’t.”

No problem, then. Now that we are free to identify as anything we
want, he can pick whatever works.

Sounds like a good kid; I hope he succeeds.

There's an old "Freak Brothers" comic where Fat Freddy hears about how
schools are giving Ritalin to students, and after learning that Ritalin
is a type of amphetamine he disguises himself as a kid and tries to
enroll in the local elementary school.

He tells office staff that he is from the local neighborhood, and they
inform him he must attend the school on the opposite side of town. He
pretends to act crazy and gets sent to the nurse's office and tells her
he is hyperactive and needs Ritalin. She tells him they only give
Ritalin to kids at Ronald Reagan Elementary School, and here they give
them elephant tranquilizers.

Now in Fat Freddy's case it was the part of town he lived in which
determined which school he attended. In this case they've dropped all
pretense of busing rich/poor kids to the opposite respective parts of
town and base their admittance on race alone. Fortunately, it is
illegal to require someone to identify their race/ethnicity -- so
checking that box on employment/census/school admission forms/etc.
is entirely voluntary.

I always refuse to answer because it is none of their business, and
unless I am a member of a non-white group it doesn't benefit me
whatsoever. This black kid should resubmit his application with
his race excluded, or just lie and dare them to question his
ethnic heritage.

Wow, I haven't thought about the old comix in years. I had most every
R.Crumb comic.
