[First Project] A Lost Lady by Willa Cather

Hi, 

I'd like to try my hand at producing an ebook for SE. For my first project, I was considering A Lost Lady by Willa Cather. It's relatively short and doesn't appear to have many formatting challenges. I'm open to working on a different title if need be.

Actually this one is too short; since it's about 35k words it's below
our limit for individual books and would instead go in a Willa Cather
short fiction omnibus.

Our minimum word count for individual books is 40k words.

Good to know, thanks! Perhaps I could pivot slightly to The Professor's House, also by Willa Cather. This seems similarly straightforward and sits at ~60k words.

Great, that one would be a good start.

There is an epigraph and a dedication, see the manual for how to style
those.

Since there is frontmatter, you'll have to include a half title page,
you can do that with `se add-file halftitlepage`.

The book is in three parts. Use roman numerals for the part numbers, see
the manual for how to structure them, in particular the `data-parent`
attribute.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

Hi everyone, 

I just wanted to touch base on progress before I proceed. I'm currently at the proofreading stage, having just built the spine and TOC. 

For full disclosure, I made a few edits in my "Manually add additional semantics" commit that may have been better suited for a later editorial commit. For example:

• When adding semantic elements to <i>Æneid</i>, I removed the "Æ" at the same time, making <i epub:type="se:name.publication.poem">Aeneid</i>
• There were a few instances where I was adding elements to a word that was missing from the PG transcription but present in the original text. For example, in chapter-1-7, the PG transcription reads "I envious," while the text should read, "I <em>am</em> envious." 

Hopefully this isn't a huge issue, and let me know if there's anything I should change. Thanks!

Removing the ligature needs to be rebased out of that commit and separated into an editorial commit. Fixing the PG transcription is not editorial so it doesn't need to be separated, but if you can rebase it out it is better to do so. Let me know if you need more detailed instructions on rebasing.

Combining those changes is definitely a problem. Reviewers have to go through your review history step by step, and reviewing semantics from the tool vs. reviewing semantics that are manually inserted requires different levels of attention.

I think you should be able to use this approach to split the commit: https://stackoverflow.com/a/6217314

Make a note of what changes you made in manual semantics addition. (Note also that in your commit, you included some unwanted changes like restoring commas in front of em dashes. Our style, as enforced by typogrify, is to remove commas in front of em dashes. We will want to omit those kinds of typographical changes from the manual semantics commit. Focus on changes that involve semantic tags.)

Then use git reset as the Stack Overflow post mentions. You can then run semanticate and make a commit with only the tool-generated changes, and then make a second commit with your manual changes.

Understood. It might not be the most time efficient, but I think my best course of action is to revert to an earlier commit and restart from there. I think it would be more formative to go through the steps (correctly this time) than to retroactively fix issues I may have accumulated. It should go faster now that I have some practical experience. I'll touch base again when I get to proofreading step.

Hi everyone, 

I've finished proofreading the book and updating the repository accordingly. There are a couple things I wanted to bring up:

1. The book seems to alternate between using italics and quotation marks for books. I standardized all of these to bring them in line with the SEMOS (e.g. "Tom Sawyer" --> Tom Sawyer). This is in its own commit. 
2. Cather does a weird thing where she sometimes puts a comma before an em dash (e.g. "Mrs. St. Peter laughed,—a pleasant, easy laugh with genuine amusement in it."). She doesn't do this with every em dash, so it seems to be intentional. These commas were all removed by typogrify. I could not find a part of the SEMOS that addressed a case like this, so let me know if I should leave them excluded or put them back in. 

As for cover art, this image from the pre-approved database seems perfect.  There's an adobe village on top of a mesa that factors significantly into the second half of the novel. 

Let me know if I should proceed or if there's anything else I should do first!

Hi everyone, 

Apologies for the hiatus - I've been busy lately. I added the cover and proceeded onto editing the content, imprint, and colophon files. I now have a couple final questions as I'm running se lint (output pasted below).

1) The text references Brahms' A German Requiem, which I believe should be italicized because it is a major work. However, this is not an opera or a song, so I'm not really sure what would be appropriate in this case. 

2) There seems to be an issue with the link to the page scans specifically in the colophon that I can't seem to fix. The same link pasted into other files does not throw up this error. 

3) Let me know if I should edit local.css or leave it be.
