Hi everyone,

For those I've not yet met: welcome, hopefully we can meet in person
sometime soon.

Since it started back in 2006 I've been involved in almost every
aspect of SR, though more recently focussing on our software projects;
both internal and external. In particular I maintain the team leaders'
user management system, "nemesis", the IDE and (alongside others) the
competition software. I also contribute heavily to almost every other
project and most recently, at Jeremy's suggestion, created a system
for emailing competitors, called "fritter".

I feel therefore that I am well placed to take on a more formal
leadership role within our engineering efforts.

While our immediate goals of the coming competition will necessarily
be a priority in the short term, I think that most of our systems are
individually at a point where they are reasonably usable. That's not
to say that there isn't significant room for improvement, there is on
many fronts, and I expect we'll continue to work on incremental
improvements.

However over a longer term I'd like to see us move towards better
integration between our systems, with an added focus on the
educational aspect of what we do.

An example of this would be having the IDE better support teams in
deciphering the syntax errors which it produces, probably by linking
to the docs, or improving the error messages emitted by our code on
the robots so that they suggest what the problem might be caused by.
I'd also include in this category the previous improvements Rich has
made to the new boards which have different LED colours to when the
power connections are back to front.

Clearly I couldn't possibly hope to achieve all this alone, so I'll
continue to work both with those in the community I've already had the
pleasure of doing while also encouraging others to join in. I expect
that the latter would involve working with the Community person and
continuing the series of Learning By Doings which I started last year.

I welcome input from everyone on any aspect of our engineering effort,
from general direction to the specifics of a given project, and look
forward to working with you to make SR the best it can be.

Vote for me!
Thank you,

Peter

Don't forget to post in the "Steering Committee Vote" thread declaring your intentions.

Whoops, thanks for the reminder. Now done.
