editing and running HY (hylang) code within spyder

I'm using miniconda.  I loaded hy with pip and spyder recognizes the existence of the hy modue when I import it; however, neither the editor nor the ipython console will execute hy  expressions, which are executed just fine in the Terminal (I'm using OS X).  How do I tell Spyder to recognize hy code and not tell me that there's been a syntax error?
