In the latest version of Spyder (Python 3.5.1, Anaconda 2.4.1, IPython 4.0.1) selecting "restart kernel" puts IPython in a different mode so that even something as simple as 1+1 does not return a result.  Instead it shows three dots and a colon as if you have entered a suite (such as following "if").  When Spyder starts it is fine, but a "restart kernel" puts it in the incorrect state.  Selecting "open new console" puts it in a correct state as does using the drop down Console menu and switching to a regular Python console and then switching back to IPython.
