LdapAuthenticator failures

Any reason why the auth1() and auth3() methods in LdapAuthenticator both return None on failure?

I know they log differently but I'd like to have different logic for a search user authentication problem to a user authentication problem.

It's a problem given apply() is the only exposed method here

Any advice please?
