Challenges not showing up

Why is that I don't get notification of some challenges by others? And when I do take the quiz, it does not count as a challenge.

Sometimes I go to a quiz and I see I was challenged, whether it be recently or 2 years ago. I never received a notification.  And then when I do take the quiz, it doesn't say who won the quiz and it was not counted. Is there an expiration of the challenge?

Yes, I do have my settings checked off to receive notifications
