Adding images in the doctree-resolved or doctree-read event

Hi,

I am developing an extension where I would like to add an image to a document in the doctree-resolved or doctree-read event callbacks. How can this be achieved? Just adding the node fails because of the 'candidates' logic which I am missing at that point in time.
