Conditional TOCs?

I have a gloriously ugly hack for generating conditional toctree entries (basically copying one of two files to a file that gets included).
I know of this https://github.com/sphinx-doc/sphinx/issues/1717
Has anyone implemented any of the suggestions or workarounds?
