spatialite usage with matlab/octave?

Does anybody have any experience using spatialite with matlab and/or the open source Octave (matlab clone)?   I have found some references to the sourceforge package Mksqlite, for accessing sqlite databases, but I am not sure how well this works with spatialite.  Any suggestions much appreciated.
