We're only just over a month from Elephant & Castle Mini Maker Faire. We are exhibiting there and we need someone to come forward to organise that, it could be a trustee or member, but as I am organising Elephant & Castle Mini Maker Faire, I can't really think about organising our exhibit.

We need some people to organise and man the booth, figure out what we are doing at the booth and what we're going to show.

Who is up for this?

I can help with this. I’m giving a talk and my mixer will be part of the SLMS display. Given that, I can coordinate / sort the physical side—signage, etc—but coordinating people probably not.

Tom, as you're aware, though others might not be, I applied and was accepted as an exhibitor for my lamps. Since my products are intended to illuminate other things - no point in a light if it isn't shining at something - I'd be quite happy to share a stand with things on it that would benefit from being lit up. That's what happened on the V&A SLMS stand in June. So I'm quite happy to collaborate/co-ordinate with others who will be there.

I am chucking you guys all onto the SLMS booth if thats okay, just need someone to co-ordinate this, looks like Toby is up for that? Basically just means finding out who is coming, and ensuring there is enough people on the booth, we've got like 4-5 tables for SLMS and a banner from EMF Camp. We can get some fliers printed etc...

I'll do some nice A3 presentation drawings of the new space and get them mounted on foamboard.

I'll be there on the day to man the booth.

I guess some of our stand will be dedicated to 'making a makerspace'. We'll have an array of 3d printers, Matthew's lamps, Toby's Video mixer, Gordon's capacitive doorbell...what else?

Does anyone want to brew up a project specifically for this event? And possibly the Make:Shit:Do event the following week.

One aim of these events is of course to attract new members, as well as engage the general public in what we do!

On another note I'm wondering about making a short film covering our work on the arch. To that end it would be good to have a camera we could set up in the arch for time lapse as that's always a fun thing to have. Setting it up at the back would be a good idea, potentially shooting towards the light. Anyone got a GoPro or similar? We'd need it a few months....so bear that in mind!

Dermot.

Well there are the cameras people mount on dashboards, some are pretty cheap, will have to research if they do time lapse. Doesn't need the sturdiness of a GoPro.

At least one of those was quite a good camera IIRC? So might work. Laptop  bit of a pain compared to SDcard....

we've got that laptop I donated.
It will give a bit of protection on power as it has a reasonable battery.
I've got it here at home at the moment.

I'll have two 15" MacBook Pros and a 24" monitor along with the mixer.

A rolling SLMS presentation could be good on one of those laptops. I can make this. Should raid the trustees for whatever media might already exist.

I suspect the 'making a Makerspace' theme should be something we should really go for on the stand. It'll be distinctive from the other displays and should get the recruitment message out there without being needy or overbearing.

On making films, we should talk. It's what I do (amongst other things...).

Hi Tom,

Can you tell what will be required to do? I guess you mean organising the SLMS tables is that right? It will be difficult for me to get there early on the Friday to help people setup though.
We can talk about it this evening if that's ok.

I've requested one table to exhibit printers for now but could bring multi rotor as exhibit too. But will be tough to deal with all the question on my own.

Laurent

Id like to go along.
I could bring up my 3d printer and a few arduino bits and pieces.
The only problem i have is i cant take that lot on the train.
Is there any parking at all onsite or even unloading.

Hey,

Actually you don’t have to do anything the day before, but just curate whats going on the table, fill out the form for our technical requirements etc…

Hello all,

Writing up last night’s conversation, SLMS at Maker Faire is looking like

Toby - Exhibiting + Talk
Yulia - Exhibiting
Matt - Exhibiting
Laurent - Exhibiting
Tommel - Exhibiting + Being busy elsewhere
Tommen - Exhibiting*

Dermot - Helping
Sarah - Helping
Gordon - TBC*

We’ll have five tables approx 140x70 to make a display out of.

We’ll need a rotating presence at our stand for the duration of the day.

I’m going to take a lead on the display. I’ve wrangled this kind of thing before. I’m keen to sell the making a makerspace angle to help recruitment.

It will be a lot of work up to opening, and then I need to be free to focus on my talk.

Somebody else will need to organise the people side of the day.

Tommen and Gordon I’ll be in touch. Tommel suggested Tommen’s dino heads would be good to show. Gordon let’s see what we could do - the doorbell is probably a good place to start, it’s good looking and can have a thematic link to our new space.

Do people want all the back-and-forth to be on list in public, or shall I get in touch individually?

There was talk last night of only having one 3d printer on our stand.

On reflection I disagree with this. I think it underestimates the huge appetite the public still have for this technology.

Our experience at the V&A and FT reminded me of this very strongly: the majority of people had never seen one before.

So I propose we have a Reprap as well as Laurent's delta (assuming that's what Laurent was planning to bring, that is?)

Dermot.

Yep Dermot I was planning on bringing one of my delta and few things I've printed I've proposed to bring a multi rotor as well that could be exposed and maybe a plane if you guys think is a good idea it will surely attract attention to the stand.

I agree we should have a diversity of thing as we all do a bit of different stuff, Mathew said it will bring his lamp and I'm sure other member have things to show too. The first time it's scary but now it's fun I really enjoy exhibit and show letting people know what you are doing being proud to be a nerdy geek is rewarding

My only restriction is travel.
If theres no way for me to park nearby i cant bring anything along that wont fit on the back of my motorcycle at the most.

My disability doesnt get me a parking badge as i dont get any help from the state. If i was on benefits i could park in disabled bays and it wouldnt be a problem for me.

For the maker faire you can park on a Saturday in nearby residential streets, notably the one directly behind the LCC. There is a 1.5 slot in the morning for driving into the college to drop off gear.

Unless the church is open in which case we will struggle to get into our own parking spaces because people will park everywhere.

I think your multi rotor and plane (if there’s room, could we hang it?) would be fantastic.

The conversation in the pub was more about not looking like a sea of 3D printers, which is an overriding memory I have of last year’s mMF.

The ideal for me is for instance to partner up Matthew’s (partly) 3D printed lamp shades with a 3D printer itself, as then we’ve got a story with everything: application, means, members helping each other out

I think it’s interesting we’ve got an cartesian printer and a delta printer – what can we do to compare them, and (without dismissing one over the other) help Laurent sell his ideas / mods?

I can bring along my prusa i2 as a comparison to a Laurant's delta.
Its starting to look quite tidy now and its red.
Ive even invested in more red cable ties.

Its a pity we havnt a member with an sla printer.
Maybe thats the sort of printer the makerspace could invest in to compliment the laser cutter.

I can still bring along a pile of arduino stuff and shields/components.
The door bell is still in one piece and the doorbot2 is still on a breadboard.
I just need to dust them.

The interesting thing about the delta vs the cartesian 3D printer is (an insight that Lauren shared with me) that with the cartesian printer each step of a stepper motor moves the position of the nozzle relative to the piece by the same amount. With a delta printer, the effect of each stepper motor step depends on where the nozzle is. The firmware cleverly takes account of this in generating the required x,y,z position of the nozzle, but I think it means that one step at the edge of a piece will be a different length to one step at the centre, i.e. that the resolution isn't constant.

I agree with Toby we need to display a wide range of things we do at the space one delta and one cartesian will be enough I will also bring a doodle pen and the scanner. We can hang the plane and multirotor no problem.

I will ask Lauren on the delta vs cartesian subject as I'm pretty much learning on all this I think both have advantage and inconvenient.

Matthew indeed the resolution is not constant and on my delta I use 20 tooth pulley who mean the variation is greater on the edge. With 16 tooth pulley on the size of the bed the resolution will be more constant.
Let's not take over this thread on discussing this or Tom is going to spank our butt ;-)

I'm heading to the Arch now, Matthew hope you can make it today and will discuss more and decide other things to print for you to maybe get a few other lamp.

Laurent
