Someone suggested we meet to debrief the superintendent's message and bring to the table a few other issues. Joel, as chairman may want to decide where and when we meet again.

I thought it was a good idea, and if things turn out like last night, we could all just head to a meeting place after pickup!

I advise the Board to require participants to be properly clothed during Ultimate play because:

-          I checked with our Legal Department, and toplessness on public property could be subject to penalties under state statute (2^nd degree disorderly conduct) or municipal code (public nuisance).

-          Public nudity makes some people uncomfortable, and some may stop participating. Prohibiting toplessness gives everyone a chance to play.

-          Negative public perception that could bring unwanted headlines.

Thank you for speaking with me on Friday about our toplessness issue in our Ultimate community.

 

Our organization is very thankful to Medford Parks for allowing us to play our sport on your facilities. Many of us don't realize the tremendous usage that Fichtner receives daily, let alone on Sunday. It is a privilege to use your well-taken-care-of parks. I think I can speak for all of us by saying that SOUPA wants to retain an impeccable, respectful relationship with Medford Parks, and we do not want to do anything to jeopardize that.

 

On Friday, you agreed to send a quick email to our board summarizing what we talked about. Our toplessness issue is continuing to be divisive, and I personally appreciate you weighing in and lending us your perspective on the issue.

I believe it would be prudent to ask this fine gentleman if there have ever been any complaints in the past about this... since his defining phrase in his first sentence (which is the only relevant sentence in the email) was "could be." not very hard and fast... if someone has the time to look up the statues that he sites for the whole list to see that would be great too. thanks, kelly

Not that my opinion really matters because I haven’t come to ultimate in awhile, but I’m wondering how many people are being alienated and chased off by these emails.

I like Rich and think he's a great guy but in my opinion he's completely out to lunch on criminal charges under Oregon law of the Medford Municipal Code.  The Medford City Attorney's Office is busy doing actual important work and doesn't need to be wasting resources on this nonsense.

Nothing in the MMC or Oregon Revised Statutes criminalizes the conduct Kellen described in the email.  No Medford cop would arrest somebody or issue a citation for that conduct and the DA would certainly not prosecute.  Rich does have valid points about making people uncomfortable and the negative public perception.  The community should decide how they want to handle that by ourselves, we certainly don't need the government deciding.
