Soil4Climate Welcomes Ngumbi, Ohlson to Advisory Board

Distinguished Scientist, Prominent Author Join Agriculture and Climate Luminaries

October 21, 2016 -- THETFORD, VT -- Soil4Climate today announced the addition of two new members to its Advisory Board, Esther Ngumbi, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher in Entomology and Plant Pathology at the College of Agriculture at Auburn University, and Kristin Ohlson, author of “The Soil Will Save Us: How Scientists, Farmers, and Foodies Are Healing the Soil to Save the Planet.” Ngumbi and Ohlson lend further prestige to Soil4Climate’s Advisory Board, comprised of global leaders in climate change, soil science, and environmental activism.



“We are pleased and honored these two climate heroes have joined the outstanding and visionary team of scientists, land managers, activists, and others who, through their experience and networks, are helping to guide the worldwide growth of the Soil4Climate movement,” said Seth Itzkan, cofounder of Soil4Climate.

Dr. Ngumbi’s current research focuses on soil microbiology with implications for agriculture and climate. A native of Kenya, she seeks to improve the welfare of farmers and ranchers in her country by partnering with various organizations to restore degraded soils and improve rangelands in Africa. Dr. Ngumbi also champions educational opportunities. She led efforts to create her village’s first library, and a crowdfunding appeal asking her wedding guests to donate funds to establish a science laboratory in lieu of purchasing gifts, went viral on social media. A fellow at the Aspen Institute, Dr. Ngumbi has also served as a Clinton Global University Mentor for Agriculture since 2014.

Ms. Ohlson’s book, “The Soil Will Save Us” (Rodale Books, 2014), a clarion call for soil to take a leading role in the climate movement, stands as a milestone in the literature of regenerative agriculture. Endorsing this crucial message, Bill McKibben, founder of climate activism group 350.org, stated, “On the long list of things we have to do to fight climate change, learning to pay attention to soil again is near the top. It’s not just dirt, it’s not just something that holds plants upright – as this book points out, it’s pretty damned vital.” Ms. Ohlson’s work, covering topics as diverse as cutting-edge science and feminist philanthropy, has appeared in publications including the New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, Utne, Salon, Smithsonian, Discover, New Scientist, and Gourmet. A bestselling author, among her accolades is the Best Nonfiction Book Award, bestowed by the American Society of Journalists and Authors.
