Dear C-AGG Participants and Stakeholders,
The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) will be launching a new Environmental Stewardship module as part of their FARM (Farmers Assuring Responsible Management) Program on January 1, 2017. The Environmental Stewardship module integrates the methodology and science that currently resides in Farm SmartTM, developed by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy (Innovation Center) over the last several years as part of a Conservation Innovation Grant. An overview of Farm Smart can be found on C-AGG’s CIG webpage.
Farm Smart is a proven resource, having been field-tested on dozens of farms. Its science-based models are being fully integrated into FARM to provide dairy producers, cooperatives and companies with a more streamlined, single source for voluntary on-farm assessment.
For more information on the program and the launch, please see the official announcement below.
Best,
Monica

Subject: Announcing the Integration of Farm Smart into the FARM Program
Hello,
We’re excited to announce that the National Dairy FARM (Farmers Assuring Responsible Management) Program, administered and managed by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), will soon be launching the FARM Environmental Stewardship module that will be voluntarily available to all FARM Program participants.
FARM Environmental Stewardship integrates the methodology and science that currently resides in Farm SmartTM, developed by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy (Innovation Center) over the last several years. Farm Smart is a proven resource, having been field-tested on dozens of farms. Its science-based models are being fully integrated into FARM to provide dairy producers, cooperatives and companies with a more streamlined, single source for voluntary on-farm assessment.
FARM Environmental Stewardship is a strong addition to the FARM Program’s existing Antibiotic Stewardship and Animal Care modules, which have earned strong customer support. The new module will be launched in conjunction with the FARM Animal Care Version 3.0, on January 1, 2017.
Benefits of the new module
Recognizing consumers’ increased desire for transparency, the Innovation Center supports a unified approach to aggregate and share dairy’s positive contributions to environmental sustainability. Dairy cooperatives and companies are increasingly asked to supply information about the sustainability progress being made by their member dairies. FARM Environmental Stewardship will allow for the collection and dissemination of information on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and energy use. The assessment will also help to identify potential efficiency gains, cost savings, and to track progress in a secure, confidential platform.
Once FARM Environmental Stewardship is complete, FARM Program participants will have the option to complete the assessment in conjunction with or separate from existing animal care evaluations.
Over the next few months, the FARM Program team is preparing materials for FARM Animal Care Version 3.0 and FARM Environmental Stewardship to guide evaluators and employees through the on-farm assessment process. We hope to include a tutorial of FARM Environmental Stewardship at the first annual FARM Evaluator Conference this November in Nashville, TN.
As environmental science continues to evolve, the models and science in FARM Environmental Stewardship will be updated in partnership with the Innovation Center. The governance structure for FARM Environmental Stewardship will mirror that of FARM Animal Care with input from a technical writing group and the NMPF Environmental Committee. Final approval for the FARM Program rests with the NMPF Board of Directors. Staff and experts from the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy will participate on both the Technical Writing Group and the Environmental Committee.
Please feel free to contact Ryan Bennett, NMPF’s Senior Director of Industry and Environmental Affairs, at rben...@nmpf.org, with any questions regarding this announcement, or visit the FARM website at http://nationaldairyfarm.com/environment.
Sincerely,
Chad Frahm Emily Meredith
