Hi everyone,

Anyone heard of using urine as fertilizer?  I guess it's not anything new. I have been trying this at home with clear and positive results. But I just heard of the Rich Earth Institute which conducts field tests and which found no difference between using urine and artificial fertilizers. Imagine the amount of pollution that can be reduced from waterways!

They also link to a company that provides portable toilets that separate urine.

Pee is Number One for plants!

But like biochar, you should only use the mature, not raw, product, which is too strong.

In fact peeing on biochar is the best way to mature both for beneficial soil applications.

Mine goes on my leaf compost pile (with biochar).

Urine is sterile (except for those with bladder infections), and contains almost all of our excreted nitrogen and much of the phosphorus.

In my view urine should be separated and recycled at the source, and not contaminated with fecal material by being flushed into the toilet.

There are a couple of excellent books on how best to use pee as a fertilizer.

I’m in Jamaica and the books are in Cambridge, Mass but you should be able to find them with a google search.
