Tom:cc list and ErichThanks for the note. Three points thougha. It is really easy to do this biochar work (and earlier with you on the stoves list [which is getting some words from me about biochar right now]) when you are retired.b. You are the one who has made the biggest contributions as owner/manager of this list (and 4-5 other bio-based lists). But those are probably relatively small compared to the time and dollars you have had to spend with USBI (now, as our new chairman). the last Corvallis conference (also the main organizer there), and most recently as the incoming chair of IBI. So Tom - thank you for your huge biochar efforts. (And I have seen Tom in operation as a paid consultant mostly on material handling - he is the best.)c. I miss Erich terribly. He routinely brought the most interesting new information about biochar to this list. Erich, I join Tom in saying thanks; hope you will be able to be back with us soon. Also happy holidays,RonOn Dec 16, 2016, at 5:47 PM, 'Tom Miles' tmi...@trmiles.com [biochar] <bio...@yahoogroups.com> wrote:We owe a debt of gratitude on this list to Erich Knight and Ron Larson. Just over 10 years ago they asked me to create a “terra preta” listserv. They wanted to start a conversation about biochar online leading up to the International Agrichar Initiative (now IBI) meeting in Australia. Each has worked hard to contribute to our education in their areas of interest.
Erich has combined his first-hand knowledge of agriculture with his interest in biochar. From his deck he can show you the gardens and fields that he has cultivated with biochar. He will describe unseen interactions to which he attributes his gardening success. He uses biochar in the estates and landscapes that he manages. He has shared links to new research and relentlessly pestered producers and politicians alike to promote biochar.
Ron has patiently labored to find opportunities to use biochar for carbon sequestration. He has proposed and promoted biochar legislation, introduced “biochar” into legislative and regulatory vocabulary, and defended biochar in the forums of climate change. He has been an important contributor to IBI and to the USBI.
A special thanks to both of them for launching us on this biochar conversation, for their patience as we punish them for their enthusiasm, and for staying with us as we work though the challenges and opportunities. We are more than 900 on this list, due in no small part to their initiative.
Happy Holidays
Tom
