FROM C-BS2 CHICAGO TODAY:
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Click to enlarge1 of 1
Mayor Daley had words of admiration for Oprah Winfrey on Thursday and
suggested unfair criticism about her closure of Michigan Avenue may
have expedited her departure from Chicago.

Oprah Winfrey's expected announcement that she'll end her show -- and
the prospect that she'll say goodbye to Chicago - has Mayor Daley
placing some blame on the media.

CBS 2's Mike Parker reports.

Daley said Thursday evening he's going to call Oprah to get the real
story. But he's obviously concerned that if she says farewell to this
city it'll be a blow to Chicago's image.

"I think she was the most successful woman that we will ever know in
the history of this country," Daley said at a fundraising event for
United Negro College Fund.

The mayor says it was the flap over the show's season opener on
Michigan Avenue in September that may have helped set Oprah's travel
plans in stone. There was criticism about shutting down the
Magnificent Mile for days for the taping. She reimbursed the city for
costs related to the closure.

"That became a big rhubarb in the Chicago press -- beat up Oprah,"
Daley told reporters. "So you keep kicking people, people will leave,
simple as that."

Pressed about whether the media really caused Oprah to flee, Daley
added: "I'm just saying that when someone's doing something like that,
most cities would love it. ... It's just amazing. I don't know why it
became so controversial."

Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper joked on todays CBS 2 Morning
News: "I think he's officially lost his mind. I think Richie has gone
over the deep end."

There were plenty of Winfrey fans at Thursday's fundraising event. One
of them said she could understand why Oprah might want to switch
gears.

"You have to start living for yourself and doing some of the things
you really want to do," Faye Watson said. "Because it's not promised
or guaranteed that you'll be around. (Oprah should) enjoy some of her
billions and relieve herself of the stress."

How about the REAL reason Oprah's (suddenly) quitting - that her use
of her show for endorsement of a presidential candidate hated by most
white Americans, as reflected in exit polls, cost her all or almost
all her white viewers in Red Nation and the advertisers then no longer
would pay anywhere near as high rates?

The woman is THE MOST POWERFUL woman in the face of this planet. Who
said she was even leaving CHICAGO? That was never said. She is
leaving network TV and move her show to HER OWN CABLE NETWORK.
How much drama do you need to explain that?
Is she the first entertainer to endorse a candidate? Hardly and what
the fuck does 'black' have to do with it?

Betcha two years from now, Oprah doesn't have any high-dollar
ADVERTISERS left - and "retires" totally. (She's rich enough to
afford it easily now.)
Endore - maybe not the first. Turn her show into shilling for one
particular presidential candidate - that's what she was "first" at.
And, yes, both she and that candidate she shilled for are black.

I heard Oprah is fond of DVDA, but the problem is that she's so fat
that you have to roll her in flour first and aim for the wet spots.

She makes good old Jim Baaker and Tammy Faye back in the '80's, look
like street urchins. And they grew tall and fell hard. She doesn't
even have a Church, or Tax Free religious status!

I understand that Andy Williams is a Republican (so is Pat Boone), Jay
Leno appears to lean that way. Carson in his day? I dunno.

Like most celebrities, she started from squat. But, she doesn't
influence me at all.

But if I had a book, and it made her "book club", I would be an
immense success. With real sales to real people.

Not bulk orders from the Conservative Book Club like a recent woman
who has been in the news lately.

Heck! Oprah even backed a liar by accident once. And it made her

I want to see Liberal Oprah and Conservative (felon) Martha Stewart in
a cage match!

And both are influential.

That was BEFORE she turned her show into a shill for Obama - and
alienated that large majority of "women" who are white in America.
Sort of like that other talk-television host Rosie O'Donnell who
alienated gun owners - and ended up, immediately, with a boycott of
her advertisers. Very soon lost her advertisers - and her show - for
alienating a large percent of her audience.

Her ratings are actually up this season:

http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=117388

She remains far & away the highest rated talk show in America even
after a quarter century of dominating the air waves. She probably
just wanted to quit while she's still on top.

What good is it being wealthy and successful if you don't have any private
time to enjoy it? Putting on a daily show, even with tons of help from
others, is still a hassle. She's no longer a young woman, and I am
guessing that she probably wants to take some time to smell the flowers a
while..... and then come back under a different format. Sort of like Jay
Leno has done. It will be fun seeing what she does.

It is reported that "Judge Judy" and the re-runs of "2 and 1/2 Men" have
superseded Oprah's audience, so she is seeing something that showed her
another direction. It's time, I should think.

Her support of Obama hurt her a lot, with the general public. I haven't
watched her for 20 years. Not a fan at all.

As usual, you're a lying sack of shit.

And it's not just her. "Live with Regis and Kelly" had the same 7
percent decline last season. Shows with Jerry Springer, Maury Povich

It tells me that you post without thinking.

Thanks for admitting that Oprah's retirement has nothing to do with

Might be true enough. I understand, she was outnumbered by 2 other shows:
"Judge Judy" and the re-runs of "2 and 1/2 Men"--which is hilarious. We
watched all of the original shows on CBS on the Monday night time. Maybe
people aren't into the emotive things at this time of economical and
troubled times.

Audiences change, and it will ever be so.

I am also surprised by the announcement by Maher on HBO (that he was leaving
after next season.) I watched the last show of the year, and he clearly
stated that he would be back and going. There was no suggestion that he
would be winding down in any way.

Oprah was slipping in the ratings last season, but this season she's
up 39%:

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/oprahs-ratings-soar-in-season-debut_1117636

She's not only the highest rated talk show in America, but for the
first time the highest syndicated show period.

If that's true then she's even more impressive. To lose all of white
America & all of Red Nation, yet still remain the highest rated talk
show in America & jump 39% in the ratings is quite impressive:

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/oprahs-ratings-soar-in-season-debut_1117636

And Sarah Palin, who is the Queen of Red Nation & white America just
gave Oprah the very first interview of her book tour & said that Oprah
will always be the Queen & that Oprah was a huge source of inspiration
to her when she was a stay at home mom

Of course it's not true. He's a liar.

If what you just said is true, you admit that NEITHER Obama is liked
or respected by white people in Red Nation!

Years and years ago, I watched Oprah occasionally - - and decided not to
watch Oprah anymore....:-)
I have no personal vendetta against the woman at all -but the show is
nothing but cheap commercialism- reminds me of the late Ann Landers.
She perhaps has done a lot of good with her phenomenal income, and
deserves praise for whatever good causes she has pursued -
she is a very savvy business woman. - - Olly

Now it's probably far higher. She just got her highest ratings in 2
years when she interviewed Sarah Palin.

Wake up. Jobless - whether laid-off or retired men - will watch
almost ANYTHING to be "entertained." I've seen this; my father did
that when he retired.
Oprah's core audience always was welfare people (jobless), college
kids (jobless in afternoon and no classes then), retirees (jobless).
Who else wasn't at work at the time her show aired?

Still waiting for you to support your statement that Oprah's
retirement has to do with supporting Obama.

Actually her core audience is stay-at-home moms.

You've already proven you now nothing about Oprah. Why not just shut
the fuck up and stop making yourself look stupid?

Or, rather,more stupid.

What's a "stay-at-home" mom - or dad - usually? Mainly welfare
parents, the downsized, etc. There aren't enough parents in recent
years well-off enough that they can keep a family middle-class on one
parent's income alone voluntarily.
