I was very pleased to see this message from Johnny Brananas as it confirms the line I already have, at least since 24 November 2011. That I have the apparent correct line is thanks to M. Sjostrom who has access to Elgenstierna's books on the Swedish aristocracy (Volume VII Sinclair).

However there is one discrepancy.

Brananas gives:
Note that Magnus Sinclair of Skaill made a 1580 resignation of sasine "in favour of John Sinclair, his eldest son, and Mary Stewart, his spouse, of Tohoip and Brabester."

According to Elgenstierna there was a John Sinclair, of Tollap, who most likely (but not certain) was the father of Henry Sinclair (buried 17 May 1589) married to Margaret Sutherland of Duffus, Henry and Margaret are the parents of John Sinclair who married Margaret Ballantyne.
This last couple are given as the parents of the John Sinclair who married Mary Stewart.

Now the question has arisen, John Sinclair husband of Mary Stewart, who are his parents?
Magns Sinclair of Skaill (and who) or John Sinclair and Margaret Ballantyne.

I hope someone can tell.

With best wishes

Eleanor Roosevelt was a descendant of Robert Sinclair of New York, by
his wife Maria Duyckinck. Gary Boyd Roberts in _RD600_ gives a royal
line of descent for him:

James V /
(illegit.) Robert, Earl of Orkney /
(illegit.) Mary Stewart = John Sinclair /
William Sinclair = Joanna Gordon /
James Sinclair = Anna Sinclair /
Robert Sinclair of New York

... but notes some problems: "For the identification of Mary, natural
daughter of Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney, said in the _Record_
to be the wife of a John Sinclair and paternal grandmother of James
Sinclair of Ricena and Kirkwall, the immigrant's father, I would like
to see further evidence. According to S[cots] P[eerage] 6:575, this
Mary Stewart [dau. of Robert] is "said to have married LAWRENCE
Sinclair of Goat in Shetland."

http://books.google.com/books?ei=cw33T8y6AYWS9QTTm5CCBw&id=aVNlAAAAMAAJ&dq=ricena+sinclair&q=%22sinclair+of+goat%22#search_anchor

Robert Sinclair came to New York about 1679, bringing a certificate
from the church in Kirkwall, Orkney, which states very helpfully that
"he was born in lawful wedlock of an honest father, James Sinclair,
gentleman, of Ricena (whose father was William Sinclair and whose
mother was Joanna Gordon and whose grandfather was John Sinclair and
whose grandmother was Mary Stewart) ..."

http://books.google.com/books?id=YdgUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA47&lpg=PA47&dq=ricena+sinclair&source=bl&ots=nCrjjnxbTM&sig=Sr21L1LplfYIQccTO-AIuq9hvpU&hl=en&sa=X&ei=cw33T8y6AYWS9QTTm5CCBw&ved=0CDYQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=ricena%20sinclair&f=false

Note that Magnus Sinclair of Skaill made a 1580 resignation of sasine
"in favour of John Sinclair, his eldest son, and Mary Stewart, his
spouse, of Tohoip and Brabester" (_Orkney and Shetland Records_,
1:196). Mary Stewart is there specifically called "BROTHER DOCHTER to
ane nobill and potent Lord Robertt Stewartt, fewar of Orknay and
Zetland ..."

http://vsnrweb-publications.org.uk/Orkney%20and%20Shetland%20records/Orkney%20and%20Shetland%20Records%20Vol%20I.pdf

Therefore, Mary Stewart, wife of John Sinclair, was a niece, not
daughter, of Robert, Earl of Orkney. Doug's new set of books shows
that the Earl of Orkney's brother, Lord Adam Stewart, another bastard
of James V, had a daughter Mary, wife to John Sinclair of Toab. Toab
sounds reasonably like Tohoip.

This website on Sinclairs of Tohop and Saba seems to indicate how the
royal descent should really go, ... thus ...

http://www.fionamsinclair.co.uk/genealogy/Isles/Tohop.htm

James V
(illegit.) Lord Adam Stewart = Janet Ruthven
Mary Stewart = John Sinclair
William Sinclair = Joanna (or Jean) Gordon
James Sinclair = Anna Sinclair
Robert Sinclair of New York

Leo,
already a couple of years ago, I have posted to you a correction about
this lineage (dealing, i.a, with Magnus Sinkler). Your system sent me
the confirmation of receipt of that post at that time.
Should I search that post from my files and again send it to you?
