I am contemplating a roots trip to Poland and Ukraine and wonder
if anyone has been to Krivoye Ozero, Ukraine, is aware of
competent local guides, whether anyone else is researching
ancestors from Krivoye Ozero and whether anyone is aware of any
records or other resources.

I'm a long-time researcher trying to get past the ship manifest brick
wall of my paternal grandmother, Molly (Malke) CHALEWSKY/
CHALLOV, which has long eluded me despite every effort in the
usual resources, including on JewishGen (including Ukraine SIG),
Ancestry, Family Search, Ellis Island, NARA and so forth; every
document I have for her (census, marriage certification, son's birth
certificate, her death certificate) just says "Russia" for birthplace.
She died in 1926 and so never applied for nor received Social Security
benefits. She became a citizen through her husband (pre-1926) and I
haven't been able to locate his naturalization papers.

I have researched her brother and sister; they were both from Krivoye
Ozera, Balta District, Podolia province (Now in Odessa district, Ukraine)
so there's a good chance that she was, too.

I have also checked the Routes to Roots Foundation, where seven kinds
of records are listed for Krivoye Ozera; however, in 2003 there was a
massive fire in the Kamenets Podolsky archives where they were kept
and the little that was left was transferred to the Khmelnitskiy Oblast
Archives. The 1875 Revision Lists for Balta district are not yet posted
on the JewishGen Ukraine Database. Or other sources? I did check
this discussion group's archives. I'm searching for:

CHELOWSKY/CHALOWSKIJ, Yitzchak, wife #1 Sure;
wife #2 Anna GOLDBERG/GOLDENBERG (Molly's mother); there may
be a divorce record.
Children Herschel CHALOWSKY, aka Harry (b. 1884, JELOVSKY in
Argentina pre-1907, immigrated US 1907), Chaije ZLOTNICK, aka Ida
(b. 1887, immigrated US 1909), Malke, aka Molly (b. 1886 or 1887,
immigrated US ~1913-14).

Louise Goldstein, Madison WI, USA

CHALOWSKY/GOLDBERG, Krivoye Ozera, Ukraine; GOLDSTEIN/
GOLDSTERN/ROSENSUMMEN/HERSCHENFELD/WEINSTROM/BRANDT,
Terespol, Poland/Brest Litovsk, Belarus; BATTALEN/WOLOFF, Voronezh,
Russia; RONEN, Kiev, Ukraine; PASHKOFF, Fastov, Ukraine.
