Dear Genners,

My grandparents from Plock Poland had a passport stating that their family
name was GRUSZKA. That name also appears on their marriage document in 1901.
However on the ships manifest five years later when they left England, where
they lived for a short time, their family name appears as GROSSMAN. And in
fact both my grandfather and his siblings in the US are all GROSSMANs.

I know that in Polish gruszka means pear. However I have no idea an reason
for this particular name change. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for any help.
