Mary-Jane Roth asked about Hamburg departure records showing a father with
three male children, noting the incoming US manifest showed similar given
names, but the children were a boy and 2 girls. Mary-Jane asked if anyone
had seen this before.

Yes, I have twice seen this exact change of gender on pairs of manifests.
My speculation is that immigrants dressed the young girls as boys, in the
hope of keeping them safer on the long crossing.

Happy hunting!

My favorite "sex change" on a ship manifest is a 7-month old boy named
Philip, who is transcribed on the US arrival manifest as a "27-year-old
femal"!!! When I looked at the document, while I can't read quite all
of it, it's clear that the transcriber took parts of letters from
adjacent rows and missed the significant ditto marks on his line from
the line above, showing that he was accompanying his mother.....(who is
listed a few pages away!).
