My parents were among the internees having escaped from Vienna
after the Anschluss. My mother kept my father's beautifully illustrated
letters, copies of which are now at USHMM, Yad Vashem and Isle of Man
Library. We visited there in June.

Thank you to Tony for sharing this.

My grandfather was interned in the Onchan camp from Jul 1940-Sep 1941;
his letters to my grandmother are also at the USHMM and I've been
building a website with them:

http://greenealogy.greenehouse.com/Bissinger/WW2/letters/1

If there are other descendants of "enemy alien" detainees on the Isle
of Man who would be interested in forming a SIG and sharing
information, please be in touch.

Thanks,
Andrew Greene

In response to the posts by Tony Hausner and Andrew Greene on the above
topic, there were Jews who were designated as "enemy aliens" in England
not only during World War II, but also during World War I. I am
familiar with this as my grandfather and many of his relatives and
neighbors in Manchester, England, were sent to the Isle of Man for
detention at that time.

They were mainly from the Drohobycz and Boryslaw, Ukraine area and
either weren't naturalized or had served in the Austro-Hungarian Army
prior to immigrating to England. In fact, recently, I found a record
on findmypast.com in their Britain, enemy aliens and internees, First
and Second World Wars Images database for my grandfather's sister.
The record was a Female Enemy Alien-Exemption From Internment-Non-Refugee
card.

For those seeking info on this topic the data in findmypast.com is quite
helpful.

Hello Genners,

Just a quick note to say that, what is now known as Knockaloe Farm, on
the Isle of Man, served as a big internment centre for those deemed by
the British to be Enemy Aliens, particularly during the First World
War.

If interested, please see : http://www.knockaloe.im/

Some files of internees are available on request. You can obtain
application forms by writing to the volunteer, Alison Jones, who runs
the Knockaloe site: ajo...@knockaloe.im .

Please bear with Alison; she also has a daytime job.
