In 1927, a family member petitioned the Southern New York District Court of the
United States for citizenship. In 1930, that petition was denied.

The only item appearing on the denial is a stamp stating

Lack of Prosecution
List No.1883

Does anyone know how I can find out what List 1883 is and how to discover the cause
for denial?

Thank you.

"Lack of prosecution" means that, for some reason, the family member did not pursue
his or her petition for citizenship. It would be worth checking to see if a
petition was refiled at a later time.

"List 1883" may refer to the court's docket, either for civil cases in general or
citizenship cases in particular. David might wish to contact the court clerk's
office for further information.

Southern District is Federal not State so any information would be at NARA. There
should also be a file at CIS in Washington DC and the CIS historian might know more
of the specifics of this list.

David might also want to check with HIAS as they helped some people who were having
immigration problems.

Dear members,

Many thanks for the responses to my question about a denial of citizenship and the
New York court's entry of Lack of Prosecution and, specifically, List 1883. I had
erroneously assumed List 1883 would identify the cause for denial. It appears that
my relative did not fully provide the information requested.

Thanks again,
David Harris
