The title of the recommanded article ( http://tinyurl.com/y9gp55x3 )
says "First French concentration camp being converted into memorial".
Be very careful : it's not matter of the first French concentration
camp, but the first French concentration camp in the East of France.
There were a lot of internment camps in France, small ones and large
ones, the largest one being the camp of Drancy. See the map :
http://d-d.natanson.pagesperso-orange.fr/carte_des_camps_en_France.htm

The camp of Pithiviers was opened in 1941 and closed in 1943.
Between 16 000 and 18 000 Jews, including between 4000 and 4500
children (according to different sources) were interned in the two
camps of Pithiviers and Beaune-la-Rolande. During that period, 6
trains left Pithiviers and the Jews went to Auschwitz.

The most important French internment camp was the camp of Drancy. It
was opened in 1941 and closed in August 1944. Nine out of ten Jews
deported from France were interned in the camp of Drancy.

In total, between 1942 and 1944, about 60 trains (which means about 60
000 Jews, men, women, children, elderly people, the sick and the
disabled) left Drancy towards the extermination camps (or death
camps), Auschwitz and many others. Sometimes, there were two or three
transports every week.
