The Jewish Genealogical Society of Buffalo (JGSB) and Buffalo Hadassah
are co-sponsoring a presentation featuring Richard Kollins, a local
Jewish researcher.

Richard Kollins, a member of Congregation Havurah in Buffalo, will
present a brief documentary film and discuss how he and his cousin,
Rick Kolinsky discovered in 2007, almost by accident, family members
they never knew existed. When the cousins made a pilgrimage to the
Eastern European shtetl their grandfathers had left a century earlier,
the most they expected to find were a few remnants of Jewish life,
such as a cemetery or former synagogue. But through a series of almost
miraculous incidents and coincidences, Richard and Rick actually
discovered a branch of their family that had survived the Holocaust
and had returned to Linitz, now known as Ilintsy in the independent
republic of Ukraine. The patriarch of the Ukrainian branch of their
family was Avrum Kantalinsky, a partisan who fought the Nazi
occupation of his homeland, and whose descendants continue to live in
Ukraine, as well as Russia, Belarus, Israel, and Germany. With further
research and good fortune, Richard and Rick were able to trace their
family roots back to the 18th century.
