I am very pleased to announce the a new Hungarian SIG Project that will make
available to researchers records that are held in archives in Slovakia. The
objective of the new Slovak Archives Records project is to photograph and
transcribe records from Slovak archives that have not been filmed by FamilySearch
(the LDS Family History Library). These will include census and vital records from
the Slovak State Archives in Bratislava as well as regional branches and municipal
archives in Slovakia.

The project began with the acquisition and indexing of images from the 1848 Census
for Szepes megye, which is held by the Slovak State Archives branch in Levoca. More
recently, the JewishGen Hungarian SIG acquired images from the 1848 Census for
Saros megye. Both of these efforts were funded by donations to the JewishGen
Hungarian SIG General Fund and indexing of these records is already underway.

The territory of today's Slovakia comprised the northern part of the Kingdom of
Hungary from the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy after the First World
War, when it became part of Czechoslovakia. It remained part of Czechoslovakia
until 1993, except for the years of the Second World War, when part of the area
became a separate Slovak State under Nazi Germany and their Slovak sympathizers.
Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is the largest city with a population today of
413,000 including about 800 Jews. There are about 2,300 Jews living in Slovakia
today, primarily in Bratislava and Kosice, the nation's second-largest city.

For this effort, H-SIG will be working with Peter Absolon, a researcher in Kosice,
who will be taking digital photographs of records that he and other researchers
have identified. Eric Bloch, who coordinates H-SIGs Other Hungarian Census Records
project, has volunteered to help with validation of census records as H-SIG
volunteers transcribe them. After volunteers have transcribed the records they
will be uploaded to the Vital Records, 1848 Census, and Other Hungarian Census
Records collections. However, those who make a donation of at least $100 to help
cover project costs, will be provided access to spreadsheets as soon as they are
validated. The initial focus of this project will be on eastern Slovakia but the
area included can be expanded if sufficient funds are raised.
