A recent exhibit at the Wiener Library in the UK, has been put online. The
exhibit, On British Soil: Victims of Nazi Persecution in the Channel Islands
1940-1945 included slave laborers, political prisoners and Jews. The exhibit
highlights the lives of the persecuted and post war struggles to obtain
recognition of their suffering. The exhibit is based on the research of Dr.
Gilly Carr of Cambridge University,

History:

The Nazis occupied the Channel Islands from 1940-1945. The Channel Islands
comprise two administrative areas (Bailiwicks), Jersey and Guernsey, which
are both British Crown Dependencies. The defeated British and French Armies
evacuated from Dunkirk in May and June 1940, and British authorities decided not
to defend the Channel Islands. The Islands were demilitarized and 25 percent of the
residents left. Germany invaded in late June-early July 1940. 2,200 residents born
outside the Channel Islands were deported to internment camps in Germany in
1942-43. At the start of the Nazi occupation there were 30 Jews who remained
in the Channel Islands. There were anti-Semitic regulations. Jews were
compulsory required to register and were forced to sell their businesses
among other requirements. Some of the British Jews were deported to
civilian internment camps in February 1943. Non-British Jews faced worse
treatment including being deported to Auschwitz.
