I came upon a Masonic Temple in the 2000 block of McCulloh Street in
Baltimore that appears to have been a synagogue. The central window
has been partially covered over, but the uncovered part clearly shows
a Jewish star. And there is a carving of the 10 commandments at the
top. I'd love to find out about the history of this synagogue --
name, date of founding, facts about the congregation, when it ceased
to be a synagogue. It is now in a rather rundown black neighborhood.
Thanks.

I googled Baltimore Synagogue History and found this website:
http://www.kilduffs.com/Synagogues.html
Sharon Israel Synagogue is well down on the page. Good photos, but no history.

There is reference at the bottom of the website:
"Synagogues, temples and congregations of Maryland: 1830-1990, Paperback" 1993, by
Earl Price. Another possibility might be Acadia Publishing "Images of America, The
Jewish Community of Baltimore" 2008, by Lauren R. Silberman

Both available from on-line booksellers.
