My Roots Trip to Poland including the Kielce Pogrom Memorial Services

Description

Elliott Cohen will discuss a family genealogy journey of over 40 years -
starting with a 1976 visit to his shtetl village of Checiny in Communist
Poland, visiting the synagogue that his dad attended and finding the
family cemetery in the woods. He has returned twice in the past four
years to try to restore the synagogue as well as put up a monument to
the history of the Jewish community of Checiny, where Jews have lived
since the 1500's. His family history traces to the late 1700's.
Additional, he has been to two memorial services in Kielce in memory of
the Kielce Pogrom of 1946 where the local population slaughtered 48
survivors of the Holocaust. Through these travels, Elliott has made
friendships with young Polish college students. He has also made
another possible discovery, this time on US soil, with DNA testing: a
possible descendent of Rabbi Shabtai HaCohen (the Shach)!

Elliott Cohen Bio

Elliott was born in Brooklyn, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and
received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1968.
His interest in family genealogy began in the early 1970s when he was
stationed in Heidelberg, Germany with the U.S. Army as a psychiatrist.
He came to Colorado Springs in 1979 as the Division Psychiatrist at
Fort Carson. He has been in private practice since 1981. He is
married, and has two adult daughters; one lives in Denver and the
other in Las Vegas.
