Rebecca Field, a 15 year old housemaid, came from Cork to Sydney as an
unaccompanied passenger on the female emigrant ship "Red Rover" in
1832. Her religion was not given but during her life in New South
Wales she was C of E. She gave her age as 23 when she married in 1833.
She died in 1889 aged 78. Her death certificate, with her daughter as
informant, stated that she was born in Cork, had been in New South
Wales for 57 years and that her father was Thomas Field, a gentleman
(stop laughing) and her mother was Rebecca Field.
My enquiries reveal that many of the girls on that ship were from the
foundling hospital in Cork which was the forerunner of the House of
Industry. The records of this institution only seem to be available
post 1838. It may be that she wasn't from there in any event. The
reference to Cork could be either to the city or the county. It all
seems pretty hopeless from here but I would welcome any comments or
suggestions from members of the group.
Cheers

Genealogy: County-based genealogy centres
The county-based genealogical centres listed below hold indexes of
parish registers for the whole of their county unless otherwise
indicated, while some also hold indexes of other genealogical sources.
The centres provide a research service based on the indexes they hold
but do not normally allow members of the public direct access to them.

Cork is the largest county in Ireland. Unfortunately, the Mallow Heritage
Centre only covers the Diocese of Cloyne. But I think it would be worth
your while to write to them as soon as possible and have them do a search
for any children born to a Thomas and Rebecca Field. Their Church of
Ireland parish records start from 1780. If her father was considered a
gentleman there may be mention of her birth in a Cork newspaper, but it
would likely say no more than "to the lady of Thomas Field, a daughter".
Such a terse statement does not provide you with much genealogical data.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlmahs/mherit.htm has a list of parish records
indexed at the Mallow Heritage Centre.

Prior to the official records as I mentioned above, resources are found in
smaller groups of papers that weren't created for genealogical purpooses. They
just work that way. :D Records that are held by the National Library are
given a simple reference number. Records held elsewhere in Ireland, show a
reference number along with the holder of the record. With that information
you can check the LDS Libraary to see if that manuscrfipt has been filmed.
It's been my experience that prior to 1864 you can't run down a list of
resources that will give your townland, a range of dates that fit what you're
looking for, and request the record. Pretty much you have to find a record
created (for whatever purpose) that might cover the area of interest and appears to
cover the time period you're researching. You can find pure gold this way,
but not easily.

Dennis, I think you must have been a schoolteacher in a former life.
All that homework! I spent an afternoon just browsing the links you

writing off to both Mallow Heritage Centre and Duchas. Would this be
doubling up?

Duchas has access to a lot of information, possibly including what the
Mallow Heritage Centre has. Suggest you ask Duchas.

I don't think it would be doubling up. The Mallow Heritage Centre only
covers the Diocese of Cloyne. I do not have any experience or knowledge
of the service provided by Duchas. I only know of them through their
website, but the fact that they are locate in Skibbereen, which is in the
Diocese of Cork & Ross, suggests they may have resources not available to
Mallow. As for do-it-yourself parish records on microfilm at the National
Library in Dublin, the films for the Diocese of Cloyne currently require a
letter of permission from the Bishop, which you can get by writing in
advance. That way you will have your hands free once you get to Ireland to
follow up on anything you've gotten from Mallow that you think may be
worth digging deeper. The films for the Diocese of Cork & Ross are not
restricted. See http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlmahs/mherit.htm for what, to
the best of my knowledge, is the current state of Mallow's indexes.

It's quite relevant to this thread, as Baltimore is in West Cork, which
might be dismissed as the most hopeless area for genealogists in Cork.
Baltimore is 13 kilometres southwest of Skibbereen on the R595. This would
put it in the Diocese of Cork & Ross.

Thanks for this.
Jeremiah O' Brien was a coastguard. In the 1861 English census he's
found on a ship, and gives his birthplace as Baltimore. But his official
service record (from the English National Archives site) says he was
born in Rathmullen, Cork. I don't think there is a Rathmullen in Cork,
is there? There is one in Donegal. I think this must be a mistake as
most of his later service was in Donegal. I would love to hear of any
placename resembling Rathmullen in Cork.
