The holy hieromartyr Athanasius of Brest-Litovsk (d. 1649) is
a saint and martyr of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Life

Athanasius Filipovich was born in the province of Minsk in 1596.
Although his father was a Lithuanian nobleman of modest means,
Athanasius acquired an exceptional breadth and depth of learning,
including modern and ancient languages, the writings of the Church
Fathers, and the works of Western philosophers and theologians. He
worked for several years as a private tutor before entering the
Monastery of Khutyn near Orsha in Little Russia in 1627. This
monastery was deeply committed to the preservation of Orthodoxy in the
face of Uniatism. Athanasius was soon ordained a priest. The
Metropolitan of Kiev, Peter Moghila, gave him the task of restoring
the Monastery of Kupyatitsk. Later, Athanasius was appointed Abbot of
the Monastery of St Symeon the Stylite in Brest-Litovsk. From then on,
he was to be a tireless fighter against Roman proselytism. Over the
next eight years, by prayer, preaching and through his writings, St.
Athanasius devoted all his strength to the cause of holy Orthodoxy and
the plight of the Orthodox faithful, who were suffering great hardship
and persecution. During a particularly brutal persecution in 1648, he
was arrested along with other Orthodox leaders, and was tortured and
killed by the authorities of the Polish-Lithuanian government.
According to the Synaxarion of Ormylia Monastery, "They threw his
decapitated corpse into a pit, where it was found some time later
incorrupt. In the years that followed, the relics of the holy Martyr
worked many miracles."

Saint Athanasius is commemorated on September 5.

The Orthodox Church remembers the Righteous Elizabeth,
the mother of the holy Prophet St John the Baptist, on September 5.

Life of the saint

St Elizabeth was from the lineage of Aaron and was the sister of St
Anna, the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos. She and her husband
Zachariah, walking in all the commandments of the Lord (Luke 1:6),
suffered barrenness, which in those times was considered a punishment
from God.

When Elizabeth gave birth to a son, through the inspiration of the
Holy Spirit she announced that his name would be John, although no one
in their family had this name. They asked Zachariah, who had been
rendered mute because of his disbelief when an angel (traditionally
the Archangel Gabriel) informed him that his wife would soon bear a
child, what the child's name was, and he wrote the name John down on a
tablet. Immediately the gift of speech returned to him, and inspired
by the Holy Spirit, he began to prophesy about his son as the
Forerunner of the Lord.

When King Herod heard from the Magi about the birth of the Messiah, he
decided to kill all the infants up to two years old at Bethlehem and
the surrounding area, hoping that the newborn Messiah would be among
them. The king knew about John's unusual birth and wanted to kill him,
fearing that John was the foretold King of the Jews. But Elizabeth hid
herself and the infant in the hills. The murderers searched everywhere
for John. Elizabeth, when she saw her pursuers, began to implore God
for their safety, and immediately the hill opened up and concealed her
and the infant from their pursuers.

In these tragic days St Zachariah was taking his turn at the services
in the Temple. Soldiers sent by Herod tried in vain to learn from
Zachariah the whereabouts of his son. Then, by command of Herod, they
murdered this holy prophet Zachariah, having stabbed him between the
temple and the altar (Matthew 23: 35). Elizabeth died forty days after
her husband, and St John, preserved by the Lord, dwelt in the
wilderness until the day of his appearance to the nation of Israel.

On the Greek calendar, Sts Zachariah and Elizabeth are also
commemorated on June 24, the Feast of the Nativity of St John the
Baptist.

Hymns

Troparion (Tone 2)

The memory of Your prophets Zachariah and Elizabeth
We celebrate today, O Lord.
By their prayers, we beseech You,
O Christ God, save our souls!

Kontakion (Tone 4)

As the full moon brightly reflects the light of the sun,
You reflected the glory of the Messiah, the Light of wisdom!
With Zachariah you walked in all of the Lord¹s commandments,
Elizabeth, beloved by God.
So as we bless you with fitting songs,
We praise the Lord, the bountiful Light, who enlightens all.

The Righteous Zachariah (or Zacharias), the father of the holy
Prophet St John the Baptist is commemorated by the Church on September
5 along with his wife Elizabeth. He is also remembered, in the Greek
tradition, on June 24 with the Nativity of St John the Baptist.

The holy Prophet Zachariah, a priest in the Jerusalem Temple, was the
son of Barach, from the lineage of Aaron. St Zachariah was told by an
angel that his elderly wife would bear him a son named John, but he
doubted this prediction. For his weakness of faith, Zachariah become
mute. When Elizabeth gave birth to a son, motivated of the Holy
Spirit, she announced that his name was John. When Zachariah confirmed
the name in writing, speech returned to him, and inspired by the Holy
Spirit, he began to foretell about his son as the Forerunner of the
Lord.

King Herod began to slaughter the children of Bethlehem after the Lord
Jesus had been born. The king sent men to find and kill the son of
Zachariah because he had heard all that had happened to Zachariah, and
how John had been born. Elizabeth fled with John when she saw the
soldiers. Herod was enraged that the child John had not been found and
ordered Zachariah to be slain before the altar in temple.

Hymns

Troparion – (Tone 2) [1]

The memory of Your prophets Zachariah and Elizabeth
We celebrate today, O Lord.
By their prayers, we beseech You,
O Christ God, save our souls!

Troparion (Tone 4)

Robed in the vestments of the priesthood,
According to the Law of God you offered whole-burnt offerings in a
sacred manner, wise Zachariah.
You became a luminary and a seer of the mysteries,
Bearing within yourself the signs of grace, all-wise one.
Slain by the sword in the temple of God, O prophet of Christ,
Intercede together with the Forerunner that our souls may be
saved.

Kontakion (Tone 3)

Today the prophet, priest of the Most High and parent of the
Forerunner,
Has prepared a banquet to his memory to nourish the faithful,
Mixing the drink of righteousness.
Therefore we praise him as a divine initiate of the grace of God.
