This must be the tobacco pan and not the sweet one..

Pan masala deadlier than presumed

By Kalpana Jain

The Times of India News Service

NEW DELHI: The pan masala pouch could be deadlier than
previously considered. Researchers now say that combined
with tobacco it can not only lead to cancer but damage other
organs as well.

Apart from the traditional harmful ingredients, popular
brands have been found to contain toxic metals like lead,
cadmium and nickel. Some of these brands were found to have
small wood pieces as well.

The effects of pan masala consumption do not take long to
show. In a study published in the National Medical Journal
of India, the researcher says that symptoms of oral cancer
were seen within two to three years of starting this habit.
A study of 36 patients with oral cancer symptoms found that
18 of them consumed pan masala.

All these patients were below 30 years and had taken to the
chewing habit two to three years prior to diagnosis. Those
using traditional mixtures of tobacco took at least 20 years
to develop symptoms of cancer.

The study by the Indian Council of Medical Research has
analysed several previous studies. It rules out conducting
human studies to prove the association over a period of 20
years or so. ``Such an approach is against the principles of
prevention.''

A significant highlight of this study is that pan masala
affects other organs as well. In experiments conducted on
rats, pan masala was found to result in damages to the
liver, decrease in the relative weights of the gonads and
the brain as well as increase in sperm head abnormalities.
The mice also suffered damages to the chromosomes, the
gene-carrying material in the body.

Chromosomal damages were found in those chewing pan masala
even without tobacco. Ten chewers of pan masala and five of
pan masala mixed with tobacco were studied. Those chosen for
the study were non-smokers and teetotallers to rule out any
association with these substances.

The study has also drawn conclusions from a large-scale
study on the effects of using Mainpuri tobacco, which has
ingredients quite similar to tobacco-based pan masala. In
this study, cancer occurrence data for 31 months were
analysed in a population of over a million.

This study reported that Mainpuri tobacco was the most
important factor for oral cancer. The latest study says this
is another indication of the harmful effects of pan masala:
if Mainpuri tobacco has harmful effects on human health, it
can be concluded that chewing tobacco-based pan masala would
be equally harmful.

Anything which you keep in your mouth for hrs and hrs daily as a ritual,
causes irritation, inflammation, and change in the nature of the cells which
are in constant contact with the irritating agent, be it paan, supari or
tobacco. The cells eventually mutate, and become dysplastic and then
anaplastic or cancerous. They then divide madly and consume all the nutrition
meant for the normal cells and in return do nothing .

There have been horrible deaths , and young deaths due to paan. There is
intense emaciation and the person dies looking like a skeleton.

I have used so called pan-masala for
45 years and suffered little consequently.
The freshness is worth all the sores,
internal bleeding, occasional hacking coughs,
biopsies and such.

You apparently havent had a biopsy done on your back of the tongue ,
internal cheek and throat ! You havent had loads of chemotherapy and
radiation giving you never ending nausea and vomiting ! I hope you never do .
Everybody is not as lucky as you.

Mr. Rakaposh, these are my personal
experiences. I am not advocating that
pan masala is harmless.

the sun.
