Elected officials should stay at home: N10 billion wasted globe-trotting

Our Fellow Nigerians:
Since the inception of this civilian administration, about N10 billion has
been wasted (flight tickets, hotel accommodation/meals, generous estacodes)
by our elected representatives on numerous overseas trips. Other than the
personal satisfaction and aggrandisement of these elected officials and
dependants, we question what the country has gained from such overseas
trips.
The declared purpose of learning the democratic systems in these countries
could be fulfilled by our Centre for Democratic Studies, Institute of
Strategic Studies or by inviting experts to conduct seminars in the various
houses of assembly.
This phenomenon assumed an alarming trend of recent, with the wives of
these officials (e.g. in Ondo and Ekiti States) spending or planning to
spend tax payers money on such overseas trips. Recent reports indicate that
the Ondo state assembly is planning a trip overseas following the earlier
examples of state assembly men from Adamawa, Benue, Edo, Enugu, Lagos,
Niger, Katsina, Rivers, whose delegations have at one time travelled
overseas, some on more than one occasion, and in some instance for over 2
weeks per trip.
Members of both houses of the National Assembly have also made several
such overseas trips usually with entourages of over 25 on more than 10
occasions. For example the Speaker recently attended a 2-day conference at
the UN with between 24 and 60 people in his entourage. So also have the
governors of Abia, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos,
Ondo, Rivers, Zamfara embarked on similar overseas trips with entourages.
Given the poor state of our economy, education, health and social
infrastructure, these travel expenditures are clearly a misplaced
priority. Consequently, we hereby call on all our elected officials to stay
at home rather than travel abroad at public expense and do the work of the
people who elected them and are paying them for services.
Regrettably, even President Olusegun Obasanjo appears not to be immune from
this phenomenon. As at the last count, he had made over fifty (50) overseas
travels, with an average of twenty-five (25) people in his entourage. The
same is true about the Vice President Abubakar Atiku and the president's
wife, Mrs Stella Obasanjo, who, individually, have
travelled overseas on more than 5 occasions with entourages of over 20
people each.
Whilst we appreciate the need to improve our foreign relations following the
initial ostracism of the country due to past military
regimes/dictators, it is now clear that the President's overseas trips are
too many and the entourages are simply too large
We therefore appeal to our long-suffering people of Nigeria (both the public
and the press) to make clear to these elected representatives that we have
had enough of these wasteful overseas travels. On our part, we commit to
continuing to scrutinize the purpose of these visits and to conduct peaceful
protests/picketing when such frivolous overseas trips occur to places where
we reside abroad. We urge you fellow Nigerians to join us in the same
actions at home when they are being contemplated.
We need to be vigilant in defence of our democracy.
