We were there for a holiday (vacation in American). We frequently spend our holidays in large European cities, visiting museums, palaces, Kremlins etc.
We stayed at the Metropole hotel. I knew from scjm that Ian lived in Moscow at the time (during his atheistic period) so we asked him to meet us at the hotel and show us some ropes. He wouldn't go to the kosher restaurant(he had some issue with the owner)so we ended up at an extreme vegetarian (probably vegan) restaurant that unfortunately didn't serve alcohol.
The hotel was within walking distance of the main shul so I went to shacharit every morning.
