I admire the late Pinoy inventor named Agapito Flores who made the
commercial fluorescent lamp. Too bad he had to sell his invention to
foreigners like Daniel Dingel did with his water-powered car.

Anybody here from Guiguinto, Bulacan or Tondo, Manila has photos of or
info about Agapito Flores? Or do you know any of his relatives? Please
post the e-mail address of Guiguinto's mayor. I wanna contact him/her.
Or let me know the official website of Bulacan.

My Google.com search results so far:

Von Flores may be more popular than Agapito Flores, the Filipino
electrician from Bulacan who invented the energy-efficient fluorescent
bulb during the Manuel Quezon administration in the Philippines.
Agapito's name can rarely be heard nowadays, while Von's name is
everywhere.

Jorge Ballena of 1217 Texada St., Coquitlam, BC, Canada V3B SS4,

Please refer to the website [above] regarding Flores and the lamp. My
father is a retired GE industrial mechanic. He knows a lot about the
history and manufacture of incandescent and fluorescent lamps. I
remember him telling me that it was Flores who invented the modern
fluorescent lamp. While he was in GE, my dad used to make multicolored
fluorescent lamps using a combination of other gases during the
Christmas season as part of the decorations.

From BALBOA'S TRIVIA

Who invented the fluorescent lamp? Thomas Edison discovered the
electric light and Nikola Tesla invented the fluorescent lighting.
But the fluorescent lamp we use today was invented by Agapito Flores,
a Filipino electrician. Americans helped Filipino politicians to
develop it for worldwide commerce. General Electric has denied this.
Similarly, the anti-cancer drug Taxol was invented by Filipinos using
Philippine yew (Taxus matrana) but patented by Americans.

From GARMENTS ASIA

The coming of artificial daylight was introduced to the world by a
Filipino electrician named Agapito Flores. Agapito was a native of
Guiginto, Bulacan. Unable to continue his studies, he worked as an
apprentice in a machine shop in the town. Later, he migrated to the
city and worked as an electrician in Tondo. For somehow, he was intent
on developing a glass tube that produces a different light.
Flourescent light bulb was born.

Flores went to President Manuel L. Quezon to show his work but the
president had no idea how he could help the inventor. One day, there
was an official of the French government who was visiting at
Malacañang took interest in the device. The Frenchman arranged for
Flores to go to Paris and be granted a patent for his lamp. It was
only much later, however, when the General Electric Company of America
bought Flores' bulb, that it was mass-produced and gained acceptance
worldwide.

And in honor of that, Filipino families all over the world leave their
Christmas lights installed outside their homes all year long.

You've cross-posted to the right newsgroup, namesake. If you want to know
about my late grandfather, Pitoy is da man!

Did you know that another website (www.agapitoflourine.com) also claimed
that the reason why my grandfather accidentally invented the flourescent
lamp was because he was a flourine addict? He used to tell me that because
flourine is an inert, odorless, tasteless, invisible, but highly electric
gas, that he came to like to sniff it. And one time while during one of his
inert gas sessions he accidentally touched a live wire prompting him to
fart a glowing gas. That gave him the idea!

There's also another website (www.agapitofloor.com) which claims my
grandfather invented one of the most important inventions ever in human
history (even bigger than the invention of the wheel). From the website's
name, of course, you could already guess what that is. Without my
grandfather, I don't know how we could ever walk ON this Earth!

There are still several inventions that my illustrous grandfather made.
But one thing's for certain, his being a Filipino is the one and only
reason why he was such a talented Agapito. My family and I are privileged
to have witnessed your (and all the other well-informed Pinoys) admiration
for my grandfather (by constructing all those websites). Now, if only
those darn cynics realize that websites are valid and reliable sources
to cite.

So that must be the reason why the municipal building here in
Smalltown, Indiana still has christmas lights decorating the lawn.
There must be a Filipino somewhere in that building! And I thought
I was the only Filipino in this town...
