Y ANGON, 20 NOV-At the Invitation of the Chairman of the State Peace and
Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar His Excellency
Senior General Than Shwe and-Daw Kyaing Kyaing, His Excellency Mr Sisavath
Keobounphanh, Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Madame
Khamla Keobounphanh will pay an official visit to the Union of Myanmar In the
near future.

Y ANGON, 19 Nov-A ceremony to present National Literary Awards for 1997, Ninth
National Mottoes, Literary and Photo competitions prizes and 1997 Sarpay
Beikman Manuscript Awards took place at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung
Road here at 3 pm today and Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development
Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address and presented the awards to the
winners.

    Also present were members of the State Peace and Development Council
Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air)
Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council
Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for
Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Chairman
of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi Chairman of
Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay, deputy ministers,
senior military officers, officials of the Office of the State Peace and
Development Council, heads of departments, members of the National Literary
Awards Scrutiny and Selection Committee, National Mottoes Compilation Leading
Committee, Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Awards Scrutiny and Selection Committee,
doyen literati, award winners, professional photographers and guests.

Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung presented first prize to Cadet Saw
Kyi Than from Defence Services Institute of Technology, second prize to Cadet  
Zaw Min Aung from Defence Services Institute of technology and third prize to
Cadet Than Lin Htaik from Defence Services Academy for Tatmadaw General
Knowledge Quiz (University Level).

    Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung also presented first prize to
Nanda Soe (Hsinbyukyun) in collected short stories for "Mingala-nan-
net-khin-hnint achar-wuthtuto-mya" in Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award, second
prize to Pathein Yan Naung Soe in novel for "Moe- pya-yaunghnin-hsi-ei
-myet--won -einhmar'' in Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award and second prize to
Sein Soe Oo in collected short stories for "Ma-yay-ma-ya-hma-athayachar-tho" in
Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award.

    Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing presented first prize to Maung
Maung Lat (Archaeology) in general knowledge (Arts) genre for
"Salay-Panpuyoke-sonkyaung Thamaing-Sar-tanmya", second prize to Maung Kyaw
Shin and third prize- to Shwe bo, Barmahti Khin Aung m general knowledge (Arts)
contest in Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award; first prize to a representative on
behalf of the Magadhi Thazi in belles-lettres genre for "Tawhlanye tha-magyi Bo
San Phe", second prize to Tin Myint and third prize to Maung Yin Hlaing
(Pyin-mamyaing) in Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award.

    Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein presented first prize to Thiha, to  
Bala U Thaw Zin in general knowledge (Science and applied Science) genre for
"YanayAlay-ma- Khithmi-Ni-sanitmya", second prize to Kyaw Thet Khaing
(Institute of Medicine) and third prize Dr Maung Thin in Sarpay Beikman
Manuscript Award.

    Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa presented first prize to
Pathein Aung Than Oo in youth literature genre for ''Einmet tainpyl Mahoakpa
hnint Wut-htutomya'', second prize to Maung Kyi Maw (Sagu) and third prize to
Maung Maung Chit Oo (Monywa) in Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award.

    Minister for Education U Than Aung presented first prize to Aung Nyein Chan
in
Myanmar Culture and Arts genre for "Myanma Yoya Thabeik Let-hmupyinnya", second
prize to Khaing Nan San and third prize to Than Than (University of Culture) in
Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award

    Chairman of Yangon City Develeprrlent Committee Mayor U Ko Lay present
first, prize to Maung Myint Than (Magway) in collected poems genre for"Yinhteka
Sanyaykyi", second prize to Salin Phone Kyaw and third prize to Myaylat Maung
Myint Thu in Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award, second prize to Maung Tha Hmwe in
children's literature genre for " Myinashin hnint Acha Wutthutomya" and third
prize to Maung Mon Myat (Kyaylet) and first prize to Dr Tun
Myat Aye in translation genre for " Zayar-o-gyi".

    Then, on behalf of the National literary Award winners, U Maung Maung Tin
(MA), on behalf of the Ninth National Mottoes, Literary and Photo Contest
winners, Yaynanmyay Maung Maung Kyi and on behalf of the Sarpay Beikman,
Manuscript Award winners Dr Tun l  Myat Aye thanked the officials.

    After the ceremony, Secretary- I Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt cordially met with prize
winners and the literati.

    The Secretary-1 and ministers posed for photos together with members of
National Literary Award Scrutinization Committee, prize winning literati and
photographers.

(3) Secretary-1 receives Japanese delegation

YANGON, 19 Nov-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt received the Japan-Myanmar CCI Business Cooperation Committee
Chairman and Itochu Corporation Adviser of Japan Mr Tomoo Takahara and party
who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

    Also present at the call were Minister at the Office of Chairman of the
State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Foreign
Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol
Department.

(4) Communications Policy Supervisory Central Committee meets

YANGON, 1 9 Nov-The Communications Policy Supervisory Central Committee held
its meeting No 3/98 at the Ministry of Communica-tions, Posts and Telegraphs at
1.30 pm today and Chairman of the Central Committee Secretary-2 of the State
Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo addressed the meeting.

    Also present at the meeting were Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing,
Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for CPT BrigGen Win Tin,
Minister; Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for

(5) Deputy Prime Minister meets business group from Japan

YANGON, 19 Nov Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment
Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met Chairman of Japan-Myanmar Chamber
of Commerce and Industry Business Cooperation Committee Mr Tomoo Takahara and
party, who called at his office this afternoon.

    They discussed development of medium and small industries and investment
opportunities in Myanmar.

    Also present at the call were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of
State Peace and Development Council Secretary of MIC Brig-Gen Maung Maung and
officials. _____________________________________________

(6) Secretary-1 receives Member of the House of Representatives and former
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan

YANGON, 19 Nov-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt received Member of the House of Representatives and former Minister
for Foreign Affairs of Japan Mr Kabun Muto and party who called at Dagon
Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 1 pm today
    Also present at the call was Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin

(7) Minister inspects Mandalay Railway Station Project, Hsinphyushin Bridge
Project

YANGON, 19 Nov Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by
officials, inspected Mandalay Railway Station Project in Mandalay on 14
November.

    After inspecting construction of the 80th Street Overpass and maintenance
of the pavement, he left necessary instructions.

    The minister proceeded to Hsinphyushin Bridge (Chindwin River) Project,
Yesagyo, in the afternoon.

    After inspecting the paving of the approach road, he heard reports on
progress of work presented by officials in the project office.

    The minister gave suggestions on and fulfilled the requirements for
completion of the bridge as targeted, and inspected the sections of bridge
under construction.

    On 15 November, he inspected Ponnya tunnelling work.

(8) Mongkhat Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 1 9 Nov The Executive Committee members and all members of Mongkhat
Township National League for Democracy, Shan State (East) have tendered their
resignations and dissolved the township NLD out of their own volition 16
November 1998.

    Mongkhat Township NLD. Shan State (East) was first formed with eight EC
members. Two of the eight EC members then shifted to other townships leaving
six. Now all members of the Township NLD including the remaining six EC members
resigned from the party membership out of their own volition since they no
longer wish to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They
notified the office of Mongkhat Township Multiparty Democracy General Election
Commission and the chairman of the party concerned. On 16 November, personnel
of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals,
documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(9) Commander inspects paddy harvesting, cultivation in Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 19 . Nov - Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development
Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung
inspected agricultural development in the division on 16 and 17 November.
    Accompanied by Minister at Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung,
Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Develop
ment Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun and members
of the Division Council, the commander inspected mechanized harvesting and
winnowing of monsoon paddy at a model plot in Ingamaw village-tract, Myeik
Township, on 16 November.

    The commander and party supervised work to supply drinking water to
Tonebyawnge village.
    In Taninthayi Township, they looked into the requirements in allotting land
under late-monsoon paddy at Shanindaw village-tract and Tonkha and Kawtyun
villages in the township. _____________________________________________

(10) JIWA presents $ 5,000 to SWD

YANGON, 19 Nov-The Japan International Welfare Association (JIWA) presented US
$ 5,000 to women and children who are being looked after by Social Welfare
Department.
    Chairman of JIWA Prof Katsuhide Tani handed the cash to Director-General of
SWD Col Sit Myaing at the department this morning.

    Also present were officials of SWD and JIWA.

(11) Donation for MMCWA, MNCWA

YANGON, 19 Nov - U Aung Ko Win, wife Thirithudhamma Theingi Daw Nan Than Htwe
and family of Taunggyi presented US $ 5,000 to Myanmar Maternal and Child
Welfare Association and K 1 million to Myanmar National Working Committee for
Women's Affairs on 17 November.

    Vice-Chairperson Dr Khin Win Shwe of MMCWA accepted the donation.
