I happened to have a piece of Brizilian money. It is 100 Cem Cruzados.
How much is it worth in US dollar? Is it a lot of money or a trash?
I'm not brazilian so I have no idea what it is.
Can anyone tell me how much it's worth?

Hah!

About 1*10^(-3) dollars, I think. Collect 10 of those, you make a penny.

Sorry about the double posting. I consulted the last issue
of JCL noticias to check the exchange rate and, because of
a mistake of mine, the subject of the posting was not
correctly set.

Cz$100.00 (cem cruzados) = how much ?

Let's see:

1 dollar ~ 10^2 cruzeiros reais = 10^5 cruzeiros = 10^5 cruzados novos =
10^8 cruzados

That is: 1 cruzado = 10^-8 dollar
100 cruzados = 10^-6 dollar = 10^-4 penny

collect 10 thousand bills of 100 cruzados and you have a penny.

***

Brazilian currencies over the years (please correct me if I'm wrong):

Till XVIII century : cruzado (?)
,
XIX century thru 1947 : Real (plural form is reis); introduced I guess
by the Portuguese Crown when the Royal family went to Brazil (fleeing
the Napoleonic army).

1947-1970(?): cruzeiro. President Dutra changed the currency,
replacing the old REAL by the first version of the CRUZEIRO. I guess
the change was made because the 'Central Bank' (they didn't call it
that way at that time) ran out of currency. A bank holiday was created
by an official decree and the currency change was the excuse.

1970(?)-197? CRUZEIRO NOVO : The currency loses three zeroes
and is called now "the NEW CRUZEIRO".

197(?)-1986 CRUZEIRO : "novo" is just an unecessary appendix;
let's call it just "CRUZEIRO", as in the gold old days.

March 1986 - Jan 1989 : President Sarney brings back the
ancient CRUZADO as the emblem of his economic plan. Please,
divide everything by one thousand.

Jan 1989 - March 1990 : President Sarney says on TV that
the new economic measures that constituted his "Summer Plan" "
solved the intrinsic and also the exogenous and psychological
components of the Brazilian inflation". For the new economic era,
Brazil shall adopt the CRUZADO NOVO (new cruzado). Less three zeroes,
please.

March 1990 - July 1993: (Now impeached) President Fernando
Collor de Mello and his gang freezes most of the money deposited
in banking and savings accounts and has the brilliant idea of
changing the currency again. The CRUZEIRO reincarnates but no
zeroes shall be lost this time.

July 1993 : "Too many zeroes printed on a single price
tag", realizes president Itamar. "What about having an artificial
deflation of 99.9% ?". 1000 - (99.9% of 1000) = 1; "That's cool",
said Itamar. "This time I think it's for real, for CRUZEIRO REAL,
that is!", agreed Minister Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Less three
zeroes - once more...

It's fake money from back when the USA ran the country, some
25 years ago. Keep it as a curiosity, or if you wish, a historical
piece.

Hey Shadow douche, the US government never ran the country of Brazil. Clearly you were either educated during one of your Occupy Wall Street pot smoking tent festivals or maybe just indoctrinated at one the US Government run schools. Brazil's government corruption caused extreme inflation, we did this to ourselves just like the US is about to do to themselves. Corruption in government and socialism programs are the largest reason any country has huge deflation of their dollars. We were no different.

Hehehehehehehehehe !!!
I knew some of the guys that ran it.

Never. Why buy American pot, when I can smoke my own Brazilian
? Lovely wild cloned female sensemillas.

Funny, isn't it, that our reserves went DOWN when we had a
right wing anti-socialist government, and shot right up during Lula's
term ? Socialism must be good for the economy.
Though I do agree that corruption is the main cause of
inflation. Corruption ran amok after the 1964 USA-planned (now
declassified) coup. Inflation reached 86% a month in the 80's, but I
suppose you can't remember that, you must have been born in , lemme
think, the 90's maybe ? Yes, definitely a Yuppie.
Did you ever manage to get a buyer for that fake money ? The
history behind it is interesting. It will make a great conversation

Well I know this is a dated conversation but I enjoyed reading it, went from exchange rate to alleged US occupation of Brizal, to an attempted coup to being educated in a tent while smoking pot on wallstreet, to being a douch, not to mention the benifts of socialism! and a lesson in corruption in the economy, all the guy wanted to know was how much he can get for 100 Cem Cruzados, the answer being, you can get anything between bubkiss and fuckall, it is worth $3 if a collector is buying though. I am a collector of antique currency and I got 84 of those u bought i got a really good deal, turns out if you can bring it to a federal reserve (Brizalian not American) you can change it for their current currebcy, that's if you can prove why did you take out l suppose a 100 or so of those in the first place.

See, worth much more than $3 dollars. It taught you how
social-democracy (a form of socialism) can save millions of lives, and
give a nation hope.

The cruzado was a make-believe currency from a right wing
government.
It's worthless. (worth a couple of cents to a collector,
maybe)

Certainly no one in Brazil. I use them as book markers.
Try a rich country.
Brazil is poor now.
