Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim year which follows the lunar
calendar. It is the month when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, and offer
additional prayers at night for a whole month. Muslims fast as an act of
faith and worship towards Allah, seeking to suppress their desires and
increase their spiritual piety. Fasting together as a worldwide community -
Ummah - affirms the brotherhood and equality of man before Allah. After the
end of Ramadan comes one of the two Muslim festivals, a day of Eid. On this
day Muslims thank God for his guidance and grace in helping them to control
their desires and fulfill their spiritual needs.

The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle. The month of Ramadan
begins with a combination of the sighting of the new moon and astronomical
calculations. The exact time of Ramadan sometimes varies from place to place
as some rely heavily on the moon sightings while others depend on science.
Dates for Ramadan 2006 (or the Islamic year of 1427) are 23 September thru
22 October in Kingston based on astronomical calculation.

Fasting not only means abstaining from food, but also refraining from all
vice and evils committed consciously or unconsciously. Allah prescribes in
His book that all able-bodied Muslims must fast. This will develop in them a
consciousness that will help them towards right conduct and prevent them
from wrongdoing. The prophet Muhammad, on whom be peace, said that if
someone does not give up falsehood in speech and actions, God has no need
for such a one to give up his food and drink. It is the fact that if one
volunteers to refrain from lawful foods and sex; they will be in a better
position to avoid unlawful things and acts during the rest of the year.

Fasting also helps one to experience how a hungry person feels and what it
is like to have an empty stomach. It teaches one to share the sufferings of
the less fortunate. Throughout the day Muslims are encouraged to go out of
their way to help the needy, both financially and emotionally. Ramadan is
also known as the month of charity and generosity.

Ramadan is the month in which the Qur'an was revealed as a guidance for all
mankind. It is a criterion by which to distinguish truth from falsehood. (
2:185) Gabriel would come to t he Prophet Muhammad, on whom be peace, every
night of Ramadan to review the Qur'an. He said that on each day of Ramadan
God frees many souls from the fire of Hell. Muslims should join the
celebration by reading the Book of God much during this blessed month and
introduce the Qur'an's teachings to others so that they too can have the
opportunity to be free.
