I am planning a culture and culinary roadtrip through parts of the South in March and April. Taking my 5th wheel travel trailer with my Yamaha TW 200 on the back for exploration. Only the first leg is planned so far - lunch at Allen and Son in Chapel Hill and dinner with Honey Monk at Lexington #1. I'll probably spend a night or two around Lexington and visit the train museum in Spencer, then across the mountains to the Great Smokies. From there I will probably head South and West through Alabama and Mississippi, but I have no itinerary, schedule or destination. I am relying on list members to point me in the direction of interesting (non-touristy) places and eateries.

Bob & Ginger’s comes to mind.

I have enjoyed several meals at the Daphne Lodge in Cordele, GA over the years. They open at 5:30 for dinner. The food has always been great and their biscuits are the best I have ever tasted. I like the fried catfish and the fried pickles. Nice desserts too. The owners are very accommodating with excellent service. Mary and I happened to eat there one night before they got busy and were able to have a short but great conversation with them. I have always made reservations and I recommend you do if you go.

The plan at this point is to go across NC stopping at Allen and Son and Lexington #1, then to the Great Smokies where I will ride the Tail of the Dragon. From there I plan to head generally South and West to explore Alabama and Mississippi, but the planning is real loose. Got any suggestions or recommendations?

Had lunch yesterday at Lexington. Excellent as usual. Let me know when you will be there. I have a project near there starting week after next. Allen and Son is my favorite. Went to school in Chapel Hill. I much prefer Eastern NC over Lexington Style.

I'll think about it. If you get as far as Nashville, the answer is yes. I'll look at my notes and try to get back to you about stuff around the tail of the dragon.

I've driven the tail of the dragon several times! Near the top is a place called Fontana Resort. We love going there.  You can find more info on their website. Warning: don't get the low-end cabins (they will warn you about them--they're the oldest cabins in worst shape, and are generally rented by the AP hikers during rainstorms, etc). Go up a notch or two and you'll be fine. I've never stayed in the lodge but it should be ok also. There are (were) two restaurants on site. The quick place is not a good choice. The nicer sit-down place in the main lodge is good. Last time we were there, they told us they were adding a new restaurant because this one had become too expensive. We tend to cook ourselves, since the cabins all have kitchens.

We like to spend several days here. It's a great place since we can hike, go boating, play mini golf with the kids, horseback riding (well, we don't but you can), swimming, etc. There's even a craft shack for the kids.  The mixture of guests is fascinating--you've got the motorcycle crowd who enjoy riding the tail of the dragon, the sports-car crowd, the AP hikers, and often a group of round dancers. The dancers are there when we go because we've got friends in that crowd--we usually time our visits to see them (no, we don't round dance). Oh, gas is really expensive at Fontana. Fill up BEFORE you head up.

Do NOT waste your money or time on the railroad trip nearby. It goes through a bunch of towns and farms and is boring. We did this once.

Fontana was built as a village to house workers building Fontana Dam during the end of WWII. Most of the cabins are the houses they lived in. If you go to
Oak Ridge TN you'll see the same style of house. They used the same plan to build houses for the workers there, also.

If you're in the eastern part of TN, check out the Fall Creek Falls area. There are tons of waterfalls within a day's drive.

Those of you who are geographically challenged should not confuse Fontana Resort with Fontana, California.  Fontana, CA was built up around a steel mill and the major feature of the town is a huge slag pile.  The town's only claim to history is that it was the birthplace of the Hell's Angels and even they soon moved on to a nicer neighborhood.

Dan,

Not sure if you are much of a fisherman, but there are kokanee salmon (land locked sockeye) that are in that area of WNC.  They were stocked in the 60's as a forage fish and started reproducing... now they run up the Nantahala basin to spawn, just like they do in the Pacific Northwest.

My brother works for the State of NC as a fish tech... he stocks most all of the streams in WNC, besides the ones that are controlled by the Cherokee.  We drove up to Santeetlah one time and collected morel mushrooms... they were plentiful and right beside the road... by far the easiest morel picking I have ever done.

Bryan,

The fact that the style of houses in Oak Ridge and Fontana are so similar is due to the reason why Fontana was built in the first place... ALCOA is the main story, considering the huge power needs of aluminum production... but the less evident reason for needing that much power in that area was more about Oak Ridge and the Manhattan Project...

Great documentary on this on then History Channel last weekend..... I belive the name of the show - misleading as it was - was "Hillbillies." It covered moonshining, the TVA and feuds.  Hosted by Billy Ray Cyrus.
