Hey everyone-

We're screening the epic Spike Lee joint "Malcolm X" tomorrow at general body meeting. I'm still mad (though not surprised) that Denzel didn't get the Oscar for his performance in that movie. I'll make sure we have popcorn. If you have any snacks you'd like to share, please do.

I'm also open to facilitating a game or two of "panther" after the movie, if folks are interested.

In The News

A couple huge things happened this week. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was repealed by congress. The DREAM act was not. The largest prison strike in US history went down in Georgia.

Education:
Effort to Convert Compton School to a Charter Draws Fire
* they're trying to close a low-performing school in Compton, a low-income mostly Black community in Los Angeles. a needed parent-signed petition turned out to be all sorts of fucked up; basically parents were bullied and lied to so they could get enough signatures. and now they're raising hell!
Puerto Rico Student Strike Intensifies; Public Education and Civil Rights at Stake

Police Accountability/Prison-Industrial Complex:
Largest Prison Strike in America Ends, Ignored by Media
* inmates in 20 prisons went on strike protesting for basic human rights - living wage, educational and vocational opportunities, adequate healthcare living conditions and food, access to their families.

Race/Society:

Quote of the Week (thinking about The DREAM Act):
"We didn't make it this time, but we will continue. We are wiser, more united and ready to keep on fighting! Watch out because now we are mad! And we won't give up. We'd rather keep on fighting than let other people define our lives!" - Ernesto "Che" Guevara

Jorky and Dijon - How's preparing for that assembly going?
Adolfo - LT stuff?
Adama - I won't be in the office until 6 pm on Tuesday. Can we prep then?
Taffy - that was meant to say your name, not Tiffany's, for the Roosevelt meeting on Wed.
CopWatch Training - next SATURDAY, not friday, downtown at the Center for Constitutional Rights. I've spoken to a couple folks but not everyone about serving as SBU's first Cop Watch team. Anyone who wants to do Cop Watch patrol, needs to have been through both Know-Your-Rights and CopWatch trainings.
