Username from ActiveDirectory userPrincipalName

I'm currently using sAMAccountName to mach usernames but would like to move to userPrincipalName. However, that field contains the domain name as well (ex: foo...@domain.com). Can SimpleSAMLphp be setup to use Active Directory userPrincipalName with just the username portion?
