managed_updates questions

I have an issue where my Modification Admin overrides are broken right now. I need to install a package only on a subset of stable computers

I had an idea of putting together a preinstall script that will do the following

1. Search for a file on the computer then

a. exit if can't find that file or 

b. run my install pkg

What i can't figure out is if i can do this without having to put my package locally in  place like /tmp.

Any guidance would be appreciated.
