Wtf? - http://arynews.tv/en/yahoo-unveils-silent-video-chat-app

Are they really that hard up for new ideas at Yahoo or basically throwing anything to the wall to see what sticks.

Cheers,
Dean

Was at an event they hosted (Mobile Meetup) last night. Even the Yahooers there thought it was a joke.

Might not be as dumb as it looks. At least it can be used by deaf people without effort of disturbing others. Also wondering if they target office workers.

Cheers,
Silvia.

If it was a random startup like the way snapchat started, instead of a product from Yahoo! we wouldn't be having the conversation. Who would've thought messages which disappear would have made sense until we experienced it. Anybody tracking Yo!? Meerkat? Personally I think soundless video is a dumb idea too, but most original ideas are like that. Ya never know, Yo?

Perhaps it's not video with no sound, but SMSing with added body language / facial expression feedback?

And the argument for the tech - not adding sound - means you can use it pretty much anywhere you feel comfortable SMSing, which includes a lot of public places like work or the train or in the street, without having to have ear phones, hit a mute button or what not.

Personally I use SMS as a time delay function, so this would not be as useful for me, but if Internet joke meme sites are any indication, people have RT conversations via SMS all the time right? And use smilies and emoticons all the time, all silent.

I don't see a need for it for myself, but this doesn't look too silly to me.

I can see the point. Most people don't like watching videos with audio 'in public'. And people are in public a lot of the day. Think open office, public transport.
But really, it's almost _totally_ the audio that is the problem.

Also agree with Aaron - Another way to look at it is simply the ultimate smiley. I'd say that a video a few seconds long can convey tremendously more meaning and emotion than a still shot.

Actually, yet another way to look at it is just an evolution of snapchat, etc. These visual mediums don't need audio. Why is it so illogical to add movement and life, but without the audio?

Interesting idea. Agree though - Not sure it will stick.
