Hey guys,

Would love either some advice, introductions or even a chat around this topic. I'm currently trying to find a business mentor to help out (tech + product background) as we're at the stage of growing the business we currently have. I've asked around my network but if anyone here has thoughts around a good way to find someone or would be interested would love to have a chat.

Thanks,
Nick

It would probably be useful to say what kind of business it is.

Yep. I'm part of Kent & Lime right now - basically curated hassle free shopping for men through smart tech. I'm not so much looking for someone who's had the industry experience specifically though.

I was hoping to see the flood of answers here..... strange noone replied.

Here is the services I tried:
1) https://www.sbms.org.au/ - cheap, retirees, well organized by government. Don't expect a lot.
2) http://thatstartupguy.youcanbook.me/ - expensive, very busy, disorganized. Couldn't get a meeting.

C'mon guys, there must be much more!!

You have to network...

Go to events.
Meet people.
Participate in social media groups, like the Sydney Startups facebook group for example, and identify the people who seem to know what they are talking about in the area you are working in. Message those people directly. Ask if they are free to meet for coffee. Ask if they can introduce you to someone who might be able to help.
Keep talking to people, and approaching people and meeting up with people as quickly and as rapidly as you can until you meet up with someone who just blows your mind with how knowledgeable they are about your area, and is happy to help you out.

Then be a good student.

Shane

For those that live in Melbourne, Startup Victoria organises free open office hours.

Will scale to more mentors soon.

Nick,

Consider an executive coach. $250-$400 per hour. The experienced person you seek values their time. Many CEOs pay for a 3rd party independent coach. I did for 3 years. In this way you can safely work through all your issues without fear of board reprisal.

Alternatively find an executive networking group of tech executives. I have had limited success with this, but some people I know have found it valuable. Vistage is one example.

Here is my take on it.

Everyone is a coach and a mentor, one of the great personal gratification, is that people want to give their thoughts and be heard, even if they know nothing about it.

So you need to be coachable, and open to the possibility that anyone can coach you. The really good people who know how to coach, are either taking cash, too busy building something to coach you or highly selective.

However when you demostrate your coachability, nuggets of wisdom come from a lot of people. When a group of friends start sharing with you the wisdom that works for you, find out from them where they learnt it from. You will often find there is a very powerful or wise individual around them, that you would normally miss.

You should also learn to be generous to others, because then others are generous to you in
return. Leaders appreciate people who are generous and being leaders themselves.

My personal story, was that I was cold called by a lady trying to sell me startup training, and I politely refused, She told me that she was new in the country and needed help, and I choose to help her. 18 months later, she got me an invite to meet Richard Branson and now one of his friends is someone I call a mentor.

Great Mentors will come to you from Great virtues you do. You do not need to be a great businessman to get a great Mentor. Different Mentors are attracted to different Mentees, partly by your business, but more importantly by the virtues you choose to display in life. Mine is Kindness and Genrousity, and in return, All my mentors are kind and generous to me as well, and it leads to a network of kind and generous people who have helped me forward.

Another person I know offered to waive nearly $120k in coaching and support, because the business I am working on answers to the virtues he is pursing in his life and his aspirations beyond money.  He is paid on equity commission on how he helps me find investment, not for his coaching.

So my one liner advice "Be the Mentor you want to be, and by living through to your virtues and values, your Mentor will come to you."

Hi Nick,

I have some credits for clarify.fm if that would help. I'd also suggest checking out meetups like product mavens if you're looking for PM stuff.

I have a tech/pm background, so happy to field some specific questions you might have. If I can't answer them, I might know a few people that can. Feel free to message me directly.

Cheers,
Ryan

Hi Nick,
If you are in Melbourne come to the next Melbourne Silicon Beach Drinks on Thurs June 2nd. RSVP here - http://www.meetup.com/melbourne-Silicon-beach/
You can do a 90second pitch asking for a mentor. You might find one on the night, or later when people see the live stream on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3GhayN9HpW3ulJV7s9AqSg
