You may have all noticed when you signed up that you were asked:
"Do you believe in Paesthetics?"

Those are all great answers, but a sometimes little more epic than the concept pretends to.

It stands for "pathetic aesthetics". Loosly it means "do it anyway you can with no reasources" or "the creative solution is the most fun". Or more confusingly "do what with, with what you have." It is not a nod to the resulting apperance nessisarily, but underscores a strategy of adaptibility and fiestyness that one needs to have to get things done in an environment where at any moment a hundred drunken party monsters can decend upon you and cover everything with ciggarett buts, beer cans, joyus screaching and booty moves. The wave is coming, and you have to get this plastic playground slide out of here! It is most effeciently illustrated, I believe, with the phrase "Is that thing bothering you? Screw it to the wall. Boom."

It also acknowledges what role "lack of control" can, or should, have over something big and complicated and social (such as a show in your house), but it also relates to having a subtle hand on things, a respect for "vibes," and an organic approach to life. The modern world breeds the delusion that we can control every variable, and the proliforation of choice and the catering to the expectation of satisfied desire that comes from professionalizatin of fun. This is actually a kind of boredom, and will lead to social ennui and "nightlife depression" and hurt feelings and a tendency to blame others for your for your lack of fun.

But that's getting a head of it, because paesthetics comes out of practical need. Its like building a chair while being chased by a pack of wolves though a thriftstore, after-hours.

Do you believe in Paesthetics?

New answers from last night's signups:
  • do you know about pronia? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronoia_(psychology) 6:14am
  • that's a very personal question 6:35am
  • I guess that must be the aesthetics of pasties? Or paste? In which case, obviously. 7:18am
  • I don't know what paesthetics means, so yeah I believe in. Furthermore the reason I would like to be a part of this group is because i've had some wonderful experiences there that marked my life as an artist and a person, from watching the fantastic planet to meeting one of my idols, Jeffrey Lewis, there. I want to help in anyway possible, I want to play an active role in getting the ball rolling once more. 7:19am
  • Maybe. I DO believe in life after love.

The "Zippies" mentioned in that article sound like a faction from a
Neal Stephenson novel.

Joe / Lucas your post was heartwarming and amazing... all I could
remember when I signed up was that you explained it to me once, and it
was something I have a lot of. sweet!

James / everyone! there's an amazing book we used to keep in the car
on tour! tons of insane stories and facts that breed positivity. Very
useful when you're stranded in Neveda thinking about dying.
http://www.amazon.com/Pronoia-Antidote-Paranoia-Conspiring-Blessings/dp/1583941231

here's a tiny part of it:
"
Thousands of things go right for you every day, beginning the moment
you wake up. Through some magic you don't fully understand, you're
still breathing and your heart is beating, even though you've been
unconscious for many hours. The air is a mix of gases that's just
right for your body's needs, as it was before you fell asleep.

You can see! Light of many colors floods into your eyes, registered by
nerves that took God or evolution or some process millions of years to
perfect. The Interesting gift of these vivid hues is made possible by
an unimaginably immense globe of fire, the sun, which continually
detonates nuclear reactions in order to convert its own body into
light and heat and energy for your personal use.

You can't live without the sun's inexhaustible flood of unconditional
love. Every move you make depends on it. Luckily, it never fails you.

Did you know that your personal star is located the precise distance
from you to be of consummate service? If it were any closer, you'd
fry, and if it were any farther away, you'd freeze. Is that just a
happy accident? Or is it a sign of favor - a big, broad hint, from a
cosmic intelligence that adores you?
"

stay well!
